I'm a new ESL teacher, teaching beginning English speakers. This book is an excellent resource, very systematic and organized with excellent progression of topics, explaining in baby steps, then providing work sheets. It's excellent for ESL teachers and students.
As an ESL/EFL teacher, I have found the entire Grammar In Use series to be extraordinarily helpful. If a student is having trouble with a specific grammatical issue, I often steer them toward specific pages in these books. The grammar is well presented without being so thorough as to bog a student down with too much information. The structure of the book is excellent: grammar information on one page, grammar exercises using that information on the very next page, repeat.For this price, you can't really go wrong.
I have been teaching ESL in many forms to many nationalities since '94. In all of that time there are several books that I swear by (& not at ;-) for helping me & my students - this is one of them.This is very specific & to the point, good examples & I rarely find errors. I have a CD in my copy of the book, it is really useful for the student to be able to listen to it & learn from it, whether I am available or not.My other ESL 'go to' books are; OPD / Oxford Picture Dictionary 9780194700597, Year in the life of an ESL student 9781604945348 (best I've found for idioms), Clear Grammar (the whole series of 4 sets of book + workbook) 9780472032419, & this one - Basic Grammar.So far, after many years of trial & error, these are the nucleus of my ESL teaching library. I would also caution anyone to ensure the student adds an excellent physical bilingual dictionary - not just use the online dictionaries. I push the student to learn some online - especially sound, but also ensure (through questioning, essays & example) that they learn independent vocabulary & can utilize that vocab knowledgeably in essays, etc.Enjoy!
I teach English as a new language to the elementary students and this is my favorite resource for the older newcomers. Even when I decide not to use the exercises from this book I still use it to streamline the progression of the skills I am teaching. It was recommended to me by another ESL teachers years ago and I always come back to it. I wish there was another one like it created with exactly the same grammatical content but with the conversations customized for a younger student.
The book itself as a learning and practice tool for students to review and self-study of English grammar is exemplary.The reason for the 3 stars is the CD-ROM. The application on the CD-ROM is as good as the book...if you have a computer screen with a height of 800 pixels or more. On a desktop with a screen resolution of 1280x800 or 1152x864, you should have no issues, But the buttons to click "complete" at the end of the various features on the CD-ROM are at the bottom of the window and will not be usable if your display area max is 1366x768 or less, like most mid-size laptops. Unlike every basic application for Windows written in the last 15 years (since Windows XP), the basic feature of re-sizing a window to the viewable display area was not incorporated into the application on the CD-ROM, an inexcusable oversight for anyone who wishes to use the CD-ROM on a laptop.If you want to use this book without the CD-ROM I would highly recommend it, or if you do wish to use the CD-ROM, I would first ascertain whether your computer display is capable of 800 or more display height (1280x800 or 1152x864 or better) before purchasing the CD-ROM version.
I've been teaching English from time to time since I moved abroad and have worked with a number of different books. I really like the Cambridge style. It's clear, easy to navigate, and the exercises are well-placed. The lessons build on one another and are well-organized. I rarely use the CD-ROM as a teacher, but I imagine if you are using this book to help improve your own English then it would be helpful.
My ESL program has been using Side by Side and other older textbooks for years. This one came recommended by another ESL program coordinator. I have not regretted the decision to switch up. This adds ease of use with practical grammatical guidelines to help create a solid teaching program. And the best part is the way you can use the worksheets as a template for class time. The basic edition was both helpful and broke it down for easy lesson plans.
When you decide to improve your english skills, it could results very difficult if you haven't the correct material or an appropiate study guide. The "Grammar in use" books collection is the perfect way to improve or study the American English grammar
