I bought this DVD to go with the book for my sign language class, because I wanted all the extra help I could get outside of the classroom as well. I figured the DVD would show how to do the vocabulary words that are in the book, but it doesn't, and if you're home and don't remember how to do the sign the book doesn't explain how to do it like some of the other books do. I didn't have a choice about the book I had to buy it for my class, but I did have a choice about the DVD and if you have a choice I honestly wouldn't bother getting it, because you won't get anything extra out of it.
It should be noted that this video MUST be accompanied by the actual book. I bought both because this DVD demonstrates the sample exercises from the book, so you can actually see what the signs look like.
I originally purchased the book separately for an ASL class at my local community college. However, after the class had ended, I soon found my skills waning due to the lack of practice and limited interactions with others using ASL. I ordered the companion DVD as a way to continue practicing at home and to re-familiarize myself with the visual aspects of ASL communication. Watching real people communicate using ASL is the only way to learn and this DVD is especially helpful in that regard.The only drawback to this DVD is that it is solely based on ASL with no spoken language or subtitles to assist hearing individuals with comprehension. You either know the signs being used or you don't and, if you don't, you are constantly shifting between the screen and the printed page of the book in an attempt to follow the sample conversations. While I understand that ASL is, by its very nature, a non-auditory form of communication, the option to turn subtitles on or off would be helpful to those students who are still coming up to speed with signing.
Text book was needed for an ASL class I was taking and it was the professor's choice. It is pretty thorough with vocabulary sections and practice scenarios too. Some of the illustrations were a little hard to make out, but if you order the video that goes with the text, it becomes more clear. Delivery was prompt and packaging was great.
The book itself must accompany an American Sign Language class, because there are too many complex signs that one might read incorrectly. The DVD is helpful, but would be better if there was an option to watch the signing in slower motion, and/or broken down word-by-word.
We thought this DVD would teach us how to do sign language. However, it starts off signing. How are we going to learn sign, or what the signing means if we don't know what is being signed in the first place. There is NO sound instruction. No where in the purchase description does it say this!!!
I am taking ASL 1 this semester, and having a tough go of it. I decided to order the DVD, thinking the vocabulary was going to be here. There are not any of the vocabulary signs on this DVD. If you need to see the dialogs over and over, this is great, otherwise, don't bother.
I would strongly recommend the DVD to accompany the book. It is very well done and complete. The actors shown on the dvd display clear and concise signing, gestures, and facial expression.
