I think this is the perfect, all-in-one resource for parents interested in signing with their baby. It includes a lot of background information on why signing can be beneficial, as well as answering a lot of parents' questions about whether it will impede their child's ability or desire to speak. (It won't.) It also gives lots of tips and tricks for getting started with your baby (or even your toddler), as well as what to expect at various stages. But where this book excels even more is that the bulk of it is an illustrated sign-language dictionary that teaches 450 different signs that are likely to relate to life with your baby. Signs range from everyday objects like "yogurt" and "coat" to directions like "come" or "help." The thing I especially love about this section (that I never found with the online resources) was that each sign includes a thorough description of how to make the sign as well as details to help you pair the sign with its meaning. (For instance, the sign for "cat" is like tracing a cat's whisker on the side of your face.)There's also a section about signing with songs and some ideas for implementing signs into those childhood favorites.

I really enjoy this book. There are several usefull signs that I am using with my 5 month old. I have been trying to sign to her since she was about 4 months. She smiles at me when I use certain signs at meal time. I like how this book has the signs listed in alphabetical order with great illustrations. There is also a section to document date the sign was introduced and date the child signed the word. Many tips in this book as well. I would definitely recommend this.

I read reviews for several baby signing books before settling on this one. I specifically appreciate that the dictionary part of this book is alphabetical, and that each sign comes memory helpers which help me to understand where certain signs come from. It is the perfect book to have lying on your kitchen table to you can quickly refer to it if you need a sign that you forgot. ;) I have had this book for only a week and have already integrated 20 signs into our day with my 8 month old. I am looking forward to having a way to communicate with him once he begins to produce the signs.

This book is fantastic! I've never found a book that explains things out as much as this book does. Coming from a family with a deaf relative signing is very important to not only me, my husband, and my children since it is the only way to communicate with my uncle. Growing up we didn't have books on ASL to learn from so I learned on the fly. My grandma and mom taught me as much as they could but I still sometimes struggle with more complex wordings. The Baby Signing Book is a great jump off for those parents who really want to teach their children to sign. The beginning of the book is full of a lot of basic information, answers to common questions, and suggestions on introducing signs and what age those signs might be usefully introduced. The rest of the book is full of 450 signs that include detailed explanations of how to sign the word, remember the sign, when it was introduced and when your child reproduced the sign correctly. There are extra resources in the back of the book for more information too. This is a great book to start introducing signs. I know that my children appreciate being able to communicate with my uncle and it gives them the option of a second language!

This book has many easy signs and has a quick guide where you can look up water, bird, car etc...so when you see the item, you can quickly look it up in the book and it's right at hand. Enjoy that it also has a how to remember this sign phrase - squirrel for example, like a squirrel is eating a nut etc...

This book is the best baby signing book I've run across. I buy them for all my friends with babies. This shows you how to actually do the sign and allows you to record when you first introduced the sign. A must have to keep from melt downs by both baby and parent!

This book is very helpful for beginner asl, and for baby ask. I'm working with a 16 month old and he's already pucked up 5 signs. The art is simple and helps explain the signs, while a number of parent questions are answered alongside signs in the first chapter. I'd definitely recommend it to others.

This book is wonderful! I found this book incredibly easy to follow and a great resource for supporting and reinforcing the use of ASL with families and their children. The ease of using this book helps encourage ones desire to keep learning more and practice what has been covered with each chapter. The 450 Signs Dictionary is wonderful for refreshing one of signs already learned but also for quick reference! The Baby Signing Book instantly becomes a valuable tool and quickly inviting!
