I was told to purchase this book for my very first sign class I took. I am so glad I went ahead and bought it! It came in incredibly handy throughout the semester. It was a great reference for me to go back and look at through out the week and in between classes in case I was curious about what we had learned in a previous class. All in all i am very satisfied with this book and I plan to keep it to look back on when I am in a stitch for any of the next sign language classes I take.

I took my first American Sign Language course this semester (Intro to Deaf Community) and this book was a requirement for the class. From the first page of this book, we're given a nice introduction into the deeper perspective of ASL, giving a quick run through of what to expect and the wonderful quirks and techniques that ASL requires. This book was beyond helpful, it's like learning to speak and the English language as a kindergarten. This book takes it slow and explains details of the language, like matching facial expressions to what you're signing. The activities in this book make ASL an easier concept to grasp. Activities that were helpful in this book were the practicing of common phrases and questions and probably one off the most entertaining games was called "Memory Madness" which was like playing the "Pyramid" game show while also perfecting our finger-spelling. Along with this book we also were required to purchase 'Introduction to the Deaf Community', I got the 5th edition, and it would be in understatement to say this book was helpful because this book saved my life, the alphabet on the back cover is an awesome touch for the moments that I get forgetful of a letter. The activities were good memory refreshers as well. Brenda E. Cartwright knows how to assure students will pass their courses with her great textbooks.

This text book is a "must-have" if you plan on teaching American Sign Language. The care and thought that was put into each activity and lesson involved was the fruition of years of collective research and the first hand knowledge in a multitude of situations proving what does and does not work for ASL students in a real live classroom. Then it was carefully compiled into a beautifully written, easy to read, easy to follow, easy to teach textbook. This book had not been written yet when I was a first year student in the program, however, I bought it anyway and use it as a reference guide and apply it to my Mentoring activities. It has been an irreplaceable addition to my reference collection and I highly recommend it.- Heather K. Melkonian

I love this book. As a new sign student, it helped me so much. It gives you a bunch of activities to practice sign language. I think that is great because practice is what makes you more fluent in a language. It also has very interesting information about American Sign Language and deaf culture. I used this book in class all the time when the teacher told us to get into groups. We would use the activities in the book to practice sign language techniques we learned in class that day. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning sign language or wants to learn more.

I absolutely love this book! This book is great for leading study groups, as well as tutoring and mentoring. On top of all of the great information and lesson guidance I love that they have "signer-cises." If you are a beginning signer you will feel muscles you aren't used to feeling. I think a lot of books do not address this issue and no not stress the importance of preventing repetitive motion injuries.

This book is great for learning and understanding ASL basics! I would definitely recommend this to every student who is beginning in their American Sign Language journey. Everything is very well written and explained and it is written by an extraordinary teacher. It helped me with multiple classes and helped me learn the content much better. There are endless amounts of practice and it is fun to do with a partner and just yourself as well! It is must have buy!

This book was amazing! I have used this book in both of my first sign classes (Introduction to the Deaf Community and sign I), as well as at home and in study groups. It has great activities and skill builders. It's extremely useful and easy to navigate, unlike many books on sign language. Really a great book. I'll definitely continue building my collection of these amazing yellow books. 😊

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a beginner in American Sign Language. It is a great resource to have and also has a lot of different/ fun activities to help you understand information that is being given to you. Having this book around makes learning way easier! Also, there are pictures of different hand signs so people can have visuals.
