Available To Downloads

The ultimate guide to baby sign language, with color photos and 200 signs! You can hear—your baby can hear—so what's the deal? Every parent knows how frustrated—how enraged—babies become when they can't make themselves clear to their families. But now, before they can talk, they can tell you what they mean—with signs!Signing has taken the parenting world by storm. Why? Every parent is eager to give their baby the best possible upbringing, the least frustration, and the best head start for achieving in today's driven, competitive society. Research (funded by the National Institutes of Health) has found that signing babies: talk sooner and have larger vocabularies; have stronger parent/child bonds; have less frustration, crying and tantrums; show more interest in books; engage in more sophisticated play; and have higher IQ scores. Now, what parent doesn't want that?Baby signing has been featured on Dateline and Oprah. Teach Your Baby to Sign features photographs of babies signing, plus line illustrations of each sign. And it provides 200 useful signs—more than any other book—so parents can have a wide selection to choose from, along with stage-by-stage guidance so they'll know which signs to teach first and which to add as they and their baby become progressively more skilled and comfortable with signing.

I liked the layout of this book far better then most of the top rated books. It has a good blend of baby sign language background and easy to follow, commonly used signs. The book is also good as a quick reference if you forget the exact way to do a sign. Overall, a great guide for first time parents looking for relevent material that your baby can use. The only thing that would make this book even better is if it were spiral bound, so it could be layed flat for easier viewing for parents and their babies.

I am a speech-language pathologist and am asked all the time, "Wont signing get in the way of my little one learning to talk?" NO--EMPHATICALLY NO! In fact, adding in sign PROMOTES spoken language! There are too many articles to cite here to back me up, but suffice it to say that when your baby points to milk and says, "mamama," she is already using gestures/signs--they come first before spoken language! All that said, I got this book for my brother and his wife--two CPA's with their first--because it is incredibly user friendly and gives real-world pointers for how to make the signs and in what contexts. It draws directly from American Sign Language, so in all seriousness, if your little one grows up to befriend someone who uses ASL, they will (on a very basic level) be able to "talk" with them! Honestly, a great resource for parents who are looking to make their first year or two with their baby smooth. Wouldn't it be great if you knew what your 7-month old was screaming about?? If he knows the sign for it, I promise you, he will tell you what he wants :) Enjoy!!

I researched for a while before deciding on this book. It received great reviews so I figured I would give it a shot. That was a bad decision. The book is laid out very poorly and it makes it very frustrating for someone who doesn't know sign language (which is most everyone reading it, right?). For instance, "mom" and "dad" are not located anywhere near each other in the book. The sign for bottle isn't found in it!The beginning of the book is a lengthy section that dispels myths about signing and why everyone should do it. Obviously if I bought the book you don't have to convince me to give it a try.The book doesn't begin with simple signs to teach your baby but begins with words like "coat", "hat", "medicine", and "toilet." Seriously, what were they thinking? I think opposites need to be together. For example, "yes" and "no", "on" and "off", and "hot" and "cold" need to be grouped together. It makes no logical sense to have it any other way. This might be nit-picky but it drives me nuts that I have to flip to the back of the book to look at the alphabet to find how to sign certain words. For instance for the word "fruit" the directions are, "Twist the "F" handshape by the corner of the mouth. See Chapter 9 for how to sign the letter "f". They could at least put the alphabet towards the beginning of the book .

This is an absolutely wonderful book! Exactly what I was looking for. It has a lot of pictures and instructions on how to do each sign. I have three kids and I don't have the time to just sit down to read. It's so great with this book to be able to just look up the word, view the picture and/or instructions, and I'm done.

This book is great. I was looking for something with easy to understand signs and easy to find in the book!My husband and I already have the basics down and have started introducing them to our child. The signs are easy and large so I can print them and take them to daycare so they know what she wants as well. I searched all over for books and this is by far the best I have found.

As someone else stated this book is poorely laid out. The author admits in the introduction that "milk" is one the first signs a baby learns or you should teach but yet she doesn't teach mailk until the fourth or fifth chapther. What the heck!!!!! Also, why am I teaching my baby anaimals and toys before food. Also, the pictures are cute but give poor descriptions of signs, I am having to use youtube or other websites to cross reference.

I was looking more for a book that taught you how to start teaching your baby sign language. This is more of a book that just teaches what signs are. There isnt a sign in there for a "bottle" either. I was looking for more ideas on where to start and what signs to start with. I think maybe the book is for older children.

At first I did not like this at all because it was very confusing to find the word I wanted to learn to sign. Yes and no aren't together, nor are mom and daddy among other things that I wanted used together. Then I realized it's sorted alphabetically. That made it somewhat easier to find what I was looking for but then the descriptions and pictures can also be difficult to understand what they mean. I'll use this because I have it, but I probably would buy it again knowing how it is laid out.
