This book is an excellent resource for the in-class student. However I do not recommend this book and its contents for the self instructing student. The manual displays signs without definitions and can lead to easy misinterpretation and poor context understanding and usuage. Once again though, it is an excellent book for the class room that builds upon itself gradually and quickly makes communication in ASL possible. I strongly recommend accompanying this instruction manual with a good ASL dictionary.
Am currently on Level 2, lesson 14. Maybe it's just me, but I think this is the worst book/method I've ever seen for learning ASL. Every time I have to do an assignment from the Signing Naturally series I feel like quitting altogether. There are no answers in the book or on the DVD - just pictures of signs for you to "try" and figure out. How are you supposed to figure them out if you don't already know ASL? There is nothing to tell you if you are guessing correctly or not. For the past year and a half I have spent hours upon hours in utter frustration trying to guess what sign a picture in the book represents or what sign is being made on the DVD - watching the same videos over and over and feeling worse and worse about my abilities to ever understand. It is just awful! I don't think frustrating students to the point that they want to quit is a very productive way to teach. I've spoken to a number of students about this program and have yet to find anyone who is not completely frustrated by it. I wish ASL instructors would find a different program to use.
There was nothing wrong with the book when I purchased it, except for I need the workbook on units 1-6, not just unit 1. However the actors who sign on the DVD really bothered me. This is supposed to be a level one ASL workbook, and they were signing rather quickly and this DVD did not come with the repeat option, as the larger workbook does. If you blink you miss something and have to start over completely. I understand that it is supposed to get you used to interacting with "natural signers", but it is too much to take in on your first day.
I am a teacher's aide for ASL at a local university. While the lessons in these books are sufficient and accurate, they are not for the beginner. They are too fast-paced for someone who is new to learning ASL. This style of learning did not work for me. The lessons are not in an order that I found logical, and the DVD left me confused and frustrated. Though I yearn for more and more knowledge about ASL, I would go about it another way. These books are difficult at best. I prefer the Master ASL book. And of course, the best way to learn is by immersion (ie: become friends with Deaf people, go to coffee chats, attend Deaf or Hard of Hearing events in your area). Immersion is the best way to learn, in my humble opinion.
This is apparently the book from the 80s which no one in the ASL/Deaf community uses to teach anymore, this was not apparent to me, so when I turned it in, they laughed at me, saying, and I quote, "lol this book is so old. Get your $$$ back!!!"
The Vista Signing Naturally curriculum is terrible. I strongly suggest that students search for ASL courses based upon other curricula. The level 1 course consists of only a DVD and a workbook. There is no textbook. The workbook and DVD are good at quizzing you on ASL phrases and concepts, but they don't teach anything. An ASL curriculum needs to establish a set of vocabulary words to be learned for each unit. It must also provide illustrations (and descriptions) of how each vocabulary word is to be signed. Apparently the Signing Naturally curriculum believes that this is not necessary. The lack of a textbook makes studying and learning anything outside of class sessions very difficult.
Great book.. I bought it for a refresher course in american sign language. It is very good for review and learning to read signs. The DVD and book are easy to follow. I recommend it for a classroom setting.
It's been while since I studied American Sigh Language that I decided to buy this book and brush up on my ring rust and when I do. I can buy the other volumes and continue to learn more ASL and interact with the deaf community and make new friends their too. Since I'm hard of hearing myself. I can find people who will understand me too.
