Many people will be amazed at how quickly a baby can learn signs and that one so small does understand what they mean. My husband and I only knew a few basic signs to teach our first child. We began with "more", "please", "Thank You", "drink" and "all done". We noticed a more contented child because he knew that he could communicate some basic needs. It really helped eliminate some whining! Now that baby #2 is on the way, we are so happy to have found the Sign With Your Baby book and this quick reference resource. The illustrations are very clear and while there are hundreds of signs in the ASL vocabulary, the author did an excellent job of choosing ones that parents need to know. We highly recommend this type of training for any child.
As parents of the world's most frustrated six year-old, we started baby signs because we read in several magazines that it would reduce frustration. We started signing to our baby when she was seven months old, and at ten months, she can sign "bottle, out, cookie, mama, baby, kitty cat, eat." We have found signing very helpful in everyday life--we were hiking and the baby started signing "cookie", I put her in her walker and she signed "out", she can ask for a bottle or food when needed. We have always had a good baby who rarely cries, but I sincerely believe that signing has helped, because when she DOES cry we know what she wants. Our friends sign with her too, as do baby sitters. We bought this chart rather than the whole kit, which we found too pricey. The chart has certainly met our needs--it is clearly illustrated and very portable. (We have looked at ASL internet sites for signs not included in this list.) I think anyone who tries signing with their baby will love it. We do.
It's small, almost 9 inches tall..It was hard to tell what the inside of the poster book would be like, unfortunately I didn't read the reviews like I'd normally do. Thinking the person illustrated would have too female or a normal male, it's cool that the illustrations are of the author,... But maybe if he didn't look.... Odd... That's all I'll say about that. It's very hard to see how these signs are supposed to be like.. :/
I was excited to get this baby sign language reference guide because it is the only chart/reference guide that I could find and it had good reviews. I received it in good time, and I opened it up to look at it. The diagrams them self are just black and white sketches of a guy showing the signs, and the diagrams are relatively small in size(kind of hard to see) but has a good variety of signs. The worst part about this product is that the man in the sketches has a mustache. Not just any mustache, but a big ol' full on walrus mustache. I'm not against mustaches at all, but you try to see the diagrams and motions he's doing with his hands, but it's hard when you have a big ol' Einstein mustache staring at you. The mustache is at the center of every diagram, so much so that there should be at least a diagram on how to sign "Mustache" so that your baby can express their feelings about his big and bold mustache, or that they would like one. If they plan on selling more, they better shave the mustaches for later, make the diagrams bigger, and add some color!
I like this card and have started using some of the signs with my baby. The downside is that the signs that are a motion- for example "more"- it doesn't show you which way to make the motion. (Pull out or push in?) I think it would be good to purchase a video or similar to see someone do the actual action. After that, the card could be helpful as a reminder.
Illustrations are too small and unclear. They are too small and of poor quality. Also, selection of signs shown are not baby friendly
ironically sign language for babies is not to teach a baby to sign its so that as a parent you can understand your baby. I bought this and learned it all but never really stuck with signing to him. He is 7 months old and he does all these hand motions. With the assistance of this inexpensive guide me (mom) and the other caregiver sin his life have been able to understand him. Great quick reference, I recommend all parents get to know these signs for an easier happier parenting experience. -first time mom
I wanted to like this. I really did. But the illustrations are of a man with a serious mustache with very little understandable direction. I understand this is meant to accompany a DVD but I was hoping to at least be able to utilize it for practice with my son.
