This book is a quick, if not sobering, read.Robert C. O'Brien's book satisfies the adage that before one can solve a problem, he or she must first understand it. While America Slept: Restoring American Leadership to a World in Crisis should be required reading for anyone who thinks our foreign-policy challenges are currently well-managed or even under control. Not only does he describe the raging storm of foreign-policy challenges facing the United States, it argues for what should (and perhaps more importantly what should not) be done in response. Whether it be a discussion about America's maritime challenges (Section 3--To Rule the Waves), it's sobering analysis of the war on terror (Section 5--Losing the War on Terror) or a broader discussion about leadership development (Section 6--The Leaders we Require in 2016), this book will serve as a resource for those looking for an unflinching assessment of the modern foreign policy landscape. What's particularly interesting about this book, is its focus on smarter implementation of conventional foreign-policy strategies. It ultimately makes a convincing argument that viewing the state of the world as it is, not how we wish it it to be, will lead to more long-term peace and stability. As we go into this election season, you owe it to yourself to understand the current state of affairs outside our country. Read this book and you'll be ready.
Especially with a presidential election looming, it can seem like there is little thoughtful discussion of America’s global role and responsibilities that considers both the ethical obligations inherent to our cultural values and the practical realities of an increasingly faceted geopolitical landscape. So O’Brien’s book is a particularly timely infusion of informed and nuanced perspective. Regardless of your politics, O’Brien’s book is a good way to begin responsible conversation about the global leadership role that remains America’s burden and opportunity.
O'Brien has been in top geopolitical trenches for two decades. He is a voice in the howling political wilderness, railing against the dangers the DC Industrial Complex (of both parties) are foisting on American security. These are concise essays on topics that may brutally affect the 21st century if not checked. Let's hope this author's depth and insight will change the course of U.S. policy, and that he will never be in the regretful historical position of telling us, I Told You So.
Robert O’Brien’s essays on foreign policy and national security are a “must read.” The current administration’s policies – an abandonment of Pax Americana – are leading to predictable, unfortunate results. While America Slept informs and guides the reader on the very real problems that we face, and what can be done to save our country.
This is a must read. Robert's vast experience allows him to clearly explain U.S. foreign policy in a way that no one else can. He shows the reader how to evaluate a national security issue according to how it affects America. The book is filled with great stories of being on the inside of policy formulation. If you've ever wondered how politicians and policy makers make the decisions they do, read this book.
Really awesome book and insightful read. If you have any interest or concern at all about American foreign policy's troubling decline lately, you need to read this! O'Brien lays out pretty clearly where we're going if we don't turn things around...
Knowing what I know of O'Brien's background in foreign and diplomatic affairs, I was keen to have the chance to read his latest collection of essays on his experiences in this much studied, yet misunderstood area of American policy.Shamefully, Americans today have lost sight of what good foreign policy looks like, because present day examples of leading from the front are so rare. Our habit of allowing our adversaries to dictate terms and conditions, has made the US an unrecognisable and almost spent force in this vital area of maintaining sovereignty. Our allies are fractured and looking for leadership from the POTUS, and sadly it is not forthcoming.Much of the gains made in the past, employing the time tested "strength through deterrence strategy" have halted. More needs to be done by the next administration, and more emphasis in rebuilding America's standing as a global power needs to be prioritised.O'Brien makes compelling cases for the US to claim this higher ground in his essays. This is a very enlightening read.
