Best known as the Green Books, the American Sign Language books provide teachers and students of American Sign Language (ASL) with the complete means for learning about the culture, community, and the native language of Deaf people. A group of 15 ASL teachers and linguists reviewed all five books to ensure that they were accurate and easy to comprehend. The three Student Texts are designed to help students acquire conversational ability in ASL and an awareness and appreciation of deaf people. Each text contains nine instructional units that present major grammatical features of ASL through dialogues, introduce students to the intricate features of ASL structure, and discuss individual grammatical features, with sample drills to reinforce mastery of each one.

This book is a fascinating study of the linguistics of ASL. I have read other reviews that commented about the book's complexity. Yes, it's true, this book is not for someone just starting to study the language. However, in a classroom setting, a student in a more advanced level will find the book quite rewarding to read. Dennis Cokely and Charlotte Baker-Shenk have produced a thoroughly researched set of books. So, to those interested, I say, " Don't shy away from the book's complexity, just be serious about wanting to learn it!" Not for those just wanting to learn 'hi, how are you'!
Peace,Excellent book series! The ASL to English Interpreter for the Deaf program at National Institute of Technology for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT/NTID) has been using the "Green Book Series" since before 2000. What I like best about the books, are the sign glosses, cultural notes, and the accompanying videos. I guess I should have said everything lol! NTID is still using the "Green Book" series currently. That says alot since NTID and GU (Galludet University) are the only Deaf colleges that I am aware of in the U.S. NTID is the 2yr college, and GU is the 4yr college and offers B.A./B.S., M.A./M.S., and Phd as well as advanced certificates in the field of Deaf Culture, language, studies, interpreting, teaching, ect...
Its appears this book is meant for a classroom setting as the book itself indicates there is a "teacher-text" and video involved. Overwhelming and confusing right from the start. Definiately not for someone unfamiliar with signing or someone trying to learn on their own.
Wonderful for improving ASL structure and expanding vocabulary. It also helped me understand my ASL linguistics class.
I hard to get used to but it was really helpful. Needed it for a college class, and so far it has really worked.
I need this book for my next few terms in school for an interpreting program, and this copy did not disappoint. The book was in great condition for a used textbook. Though this is not personally my favorite book for learning ASL, it is very helpful for learning grammar and structure.
