The Kindle version of this book is positively terrible across multiple platforms (Android, WP8, Desktop). The formatting is all over the place, often obliterating the columns and making all of the text run into a single massive paragraph, which renders it pretty much illegible. This doesn't happen all the time, only in specific sections. Additionally, it seems some (I'd approximate as ~15%) of the text is a scanned image, based on the fact that the font size is completely different from the rest of the book. Just overall a very disappointing and sloppy presentation, especially considering it costs just as much as the text version. This should be fixed.
Hey all: No question that this book is important and useful. But please beware when you buy this particular edition. The copy I received was missing pages and had duplicate pages and pages out of order etc. I did not realize it until well after the 30 day return deadline because what I needed for the first three weeks of my clerkship was within the parts that were not missing. So I only discovered the problem too late, right when I needed to read about shock and noticed all but the first page was missing, along with the next 217 pages. You don't want this to happen to you in the middle of your clerkship!
I am a PA student and I used this during my surgical rotation. This is an amazing study resource and definitely helped prepare me for surgeries and for questions from my surgeon. This is a must have for PA and medical students before and during their surgical rotations. I can't imagine not using it during surgical rotations.
This book does not have it's advertised feature -free access to iPhone/iPod, which was the main reason why I got it. The book is too bulky to fit in the white coat, so I thought it would be nice to have it on the phone. Well, why would you be lying to students?
What I like:-Sometimes helpful if you get pimped on the wards-Good practical knowledge (how to tie a knot, common abbreviations, how to write surgery notes)What I don't like:-Won't help you on the surgery shelf or Step 2-Difficult to memorize because it's a bunch of short questions and answers-Awkward size and heavy, won't fit in lab coatSummary: It's OK for factual questions that attendings or residents might ask you on the wards, but useless for the type of questions you'll find on the shelf exam (next step, treatment, how to diagnose, definitive test, etc). NMS Casebook is an actual text you can use, supplemented by Case Files, Pretest, and USMLEworld questions.
I would never suggest anyone walk into an OR as a student without this. Most questions from the attendings come verbatim from this book. Got screamed at for reading it on my phone so having a hard copy is a much more viable option to survival.
This book shamelessly advertised as a bundle with the iPhone/iPad application.No such application exist and there is no word on when it is going to come out.Until there is word from the publisher, do yourself a favor and avoid purchasing this book. Borrow an older edition from a colleague. This is clearly a scheme for the publisher to try to milk more money out of students.
i have several books for my surgery clerkship... plenty to fill my white coat already. bought this one because i thought i could use keep the book at home, and use the ipod version while i was doing rounds, waiting for a surgery, etc. turns out there is no mobile app, even though it claims it on the book, in the description. would not have bought this book if they did not lie about having a mobile app.
