I'm currently a senior majoring in Criminal Justice. Most of a CJ major is actually Sociology classes. As such, I've encountered both classic and contemporary sociological theories in most of my classes. The first thing I noticed about this book is that it's short. Less than 300 pages and smaller than most textbooks, Ritzer keeps things clear and concise. Really, what more do you want in a text? The book covers classical theories in brief, contemporary theories of everyday life and grand theories, integrative theories, feminist theories, globalization theory, and explores the newest developments in postmodern theories. Ritzer's own work on McDonaldization and consumption theory are covered as well.Bottom line: This is a well-written, clearly communicated book covering contemporary sociological theory.
I bought this textbook for a college class and it came exactly as described. Giving a review of a textbook is difficult because no matter what the subject, sometimes the material can be dry. However, I did pass the class, so that's another point towards this textbook!
One of the few textbooks I've kept over the years...well written and easy to understand. I reference this book often.
Gone are the days of heavy tomes weighing well over 5 pounds. This is an easy to understand concise version of much heftier volumes.
