As one who knew Paramedic Coakley, when he worked for my parent's private ambulance company, and who often joined him in that "still of darkness" as I too was called out of my own bed to ride in the ambulance with one of my parents as we drove over to his house to pick him up and I was then dropped off to watch over his children while he was out saving lives, I found myself revisiting those years of my childhood and recalling what a great man and father he is. I never got the chance to personally witness his skills as a Paramedic, but I would often hear my parents or our other employees talk favorably of his abilities and skill level in the field as well as what an all around great guy he is:)As a former EMT myself, Bill's memoires took me back to not only my own childhood growing up in the world of EMS, but he also opened up my eyes to how new Paramedic medicine was in the world of EMS during that time in my life. Especially in the smaller rural counties. His words took me back in time to a very adult world that I viewed through a child's eyes and thought I knew so much about, but really had very little understanding of how much was involved in its successes as well as the total cost of its "failures." Even when I became of age and obtained my EMT..the short 5 years I did it for and the few calls I went on before deciding it wasn't for me, despite my growing up in the business, were a mere drop in the bucket to Bill's vast amount of knowledge and experience. Bill truly demonstrated in his book, through his personal and professional techniques in the field, during his many years as a medic, what I remembered my EMT instructors constantly trying to drill into our class. And that was, how to "adapt, improvise, and overcome.
