This book provides a lot of helpful information for writers, although it is designed primarily for novelists, book and magazine writers. Bloggers, technical writers, journalists, and other types of writers may find some of the information provided in this book helpful. If you're looking to publish books, novels, or magazine articles, this book is worth buying.
Excellent resource for writers. Having the hard copy is especially good for jotting down notes as you research magazines and publishers. If your goal is to get published, buy this and get to know the market. I find it indispensable as I prepare to submit queries and articles to editor's and publishers. Lots of helpful information with regard to word counts, websites, what they'll pay for accepted/published submissions. Good investment!
The 2016 edition of Writer's Market lacks information critical to the search for markets, for example, it does not have an easy way to see if contests or submissions have entry fees or what those fees might be. The book has advertising in it designed to pressure you into joining writersmarket.com which ultimately has many of the same problems and is as user unfriendly as the book. On the other side, the book has a very helpful guideline for query letters. If not for this last point, I would have given this product a 1 star rating.
Anyone who's ever bought these books knows how useful they can be. If you have not purchased them before and are an aspiring author looking to publish some of your work, or if you're looking for contests or advice, I'd definitely recommend this.
Before the Internet and online sources, I used to always get this book. Decided to get it again for a reference. I must admit, I was kind of disappointed--it seems as if the Writer's Market hasn't made any advances over the years.
As a professional writer, I could not be successful without this book! It has just about every single market listed with the main contact's name, mailing address, email, and phone number. Within each market's description, it tells what the rate of pay is and some general guidelines for what that market is looking for. In addition to having the names and addresses for all the publications and online markets accepting freelance articles, it also contains a host of how-to articles explaining how to write a great query, how to put together a book proposal, how to get an agent, etc. It's a great resource to have for every person who wishes to submit any piece of writing to a publication of e-Market. I highly recommend this book!
This is the second Writer's Market that I have purchased. My first was back in 2009, but I never took the time to really dig through it, because I was still in college, so I didn't really get much out of it.Now, I have been getting published online on a regular basis, so I wanted to get this as a way for me to know what opportunities are out there in magazines and trade journals. I held off from buying my own copy for a long time, because I thought I could just go to the Reference Section of my library and comb through it, but every single time I went, someone already had it.I finally caved and bought my own copy. I realize now that even when I sat down and seriously focused on getting through the list of Magazines and Trade Journals, it is going to take me around 10 hours total, or more to write all of the "maybe" publications in my notebook, and it will take me even longer to go to the Periodicals section of my local University's library so I can sit down and read through the magazines I am thinking of pitching to.Like everyone else says, it's for the serious writer. If you buy this with the expectation that it will tell you how to make money, you will be disappointed. It takes a lot of time and dedication to seriously use this to your advantage. I have not even tried querying with this book yet, and I will give a better update when I buy the 2017 version, but so far, I am really happy to have a better knowledge of what the market it like right now: How much do magazines pay, how many articles do they accept, etc.
As a new author trying to break onto the writing scene, i needed information on the best possible way to accomplish just that. Ive read book after book, article after article, blog posts, webinars, you name it. Ive searched just about every topic you can think of amd then some!Well, Writer's Market 2016 has it all! Every peice of information you find in this book is helpful, whether it was what you were looking for or not! I especially love that it covers all genres and types of writing, not just one or the other. The list of literary agents is also a long sought after commodity on ny list as well!I absolutely recommend this for any writer, new or established. Cant go wrong here!
