I was in need of a travel atlas which I could carry in my pack as I travel abroad. The reviews I found online were unsatisfactory, so I purchased The Portable World Complete Pocket Atlas as well as the Oxford Pocket World Atlas to determine which would better suit my needs. In short, the Oxford Pocket World Atlas wins without much question.-The Maps display more detail (particularly regarding altitudes and climates)-Maps that take up two facing pages are printed on the page in such a way that they are easy to read, with no information crammed into the seam between the two pages-There are a few sections in the beginning of the Oxford atlas that aren't in the other (World Stats, Major City maps/plans, and Gazetter, and Gazetteer of Nations) which can be very useful. The Portable World atlas is a little bit easier to decipher at first glance since there isn't so much information. Otherwise, the books are about on par with each other; major roads are shown in thin red/black lines in both books; the fonts are clear and easy to read. The maps are more focused on geographical content than political, but they are still quite useful.I payed the same price for both books at Half(dot)com; I will be taking the Oxford Atlas and leaving the other one at home.
Pocket-sized, fits in every backpack.Astonishing how much information fits in such a little book:Comprehensive data-tables (population, area, weather etc.) for each country of the world.Comprehensive index of place-names (consumes 50% of the content).Time-zones, climate charts, city maps etc.Only landuse-maps are missing.Clear & readable maps.Recommended.
The other pocket size atlases have become a bit of a joke for detail. Most of them are very simplified. This is a bit hard to read all the fonts, but at least they are all there. City size is not comparable map to map. Northern Europe has cities less than 50 000 where who knows what it is with China or India.Wins by default. This one is from 2008, due for a new edition soon.
I thought this was just a "home reference suggestion" type of thing, but I found out they're using it frequently in class as well, and my daughter is becoming one of the "go to" students for correct answers with this atlas. Now I only wish some of the maps were maybe fold-outs so they would be a little easier to trace but we have the internet so we're solving that issue too. Great resource & definitely worth the price, a great buy.
A great thing about this lucid little atlas is that it has several city maps in the first section. All the maps are clear and easy to read -- it's possible to distinguish the names of rivers, for instance. I keep this next to the book I'm currently reading, as I like having a sense of location. I have another small atlas, a Harper Collins, and it's not quite as easy to read.
As a geography student, this fits the bill because it has what I need for on the go. I suppose it can fit into your pocket, but it's a bit smaller than one of those "mini" tablets. (Or think "pocket-sized" Bible or dictionary.)This 2008 edition isn't the most updated, however it's the one I refer to the most. The size is just perfect, and the maps inside are broken down in sections so that I am able to look into each country/region in more detail. For now, this has been my constant companion for my needs. Maybe in the future, I'll be able to look into acquiring myself the larger, more updated Oxford edition.
Use it every day. I recommend this small and handy atlas to anyone who cares not to lug a twenty pound larger model around. This little atlas has it all.
Just the perfect size atlas for cross word puzzles etc. If you find yourself wanting a quick answer on geography this atlas is for you
