As a college art major I developed a distaste for Dali and his art, even referring to him as a "pimp" in an essay. I was turned off by his commercialism and his overly-polished style. But over the years my opinion began to shift, and the major retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art has completely renovated my appreciation for the man and his art. This huge and handsome tome is the catalogue for the Philly retrospective, and includes hundreds of color images along with insights into the thought behind the imagery. The book takes you through his youthful experiments in post-impressionism and cubism (there are a few works you'd swear were by Picasso!), into his affiliation with Surrealism, his development of his personal "paranoiac-critical" method, and his later interests in physics and conversion to Catholicism. The middle section of the book and exhibit includes hundreds of his best-known and most widely-admired paintings, but surprises abound in the early and later sections, with works most people never knew he created. What struck me most in the show and the book was how thoroughly dedicated Dali was to his art, and how intellectually involved his work was. His draughtsmanship was also so acute as to defy belief. I realize now that I was sold so completely on his posture as an eccentric personality, that I lost sight of the power of his art. But this show and book reveal how truly special and significant Dali was as an artist, art theorist, and explorer of the hinterlands of the mind and soul.

I saw a copy of this book at a "Book Swap"and picked it up, expecting to see all the familiar works by Dali. What an amazing surprise; this was the first time I had ever seen most of the images portrayed. Someone else had actually chosen this book so I dashed home and found the same edition on ! I sent in my order immediately and it was quickly delivered. This is one of the most unusual art books in my collection.

They broke the mold after this guy.DALI was a genius in the true sense of the word. As in, not of this dimension.Hs writings are so charming and stimulating! A fascinating autobiographical windowinto the mind and soul of this eccentric, weird, amazingly gifted dude.

I love Easton Press books and this one was a great introduction to Salvador Dali. The text is done by Robert Descharnes and he does a good job explaining some of his paintings. The one thing I did not enjoy was most of the pictures are in black and white! Even the most famous "The Persistence of Memory" or melting clocks were in black and white. Other than that great copy.

I love this book, the pictures are extraordinary and the words are directly from Dali's pen to you. A must for big Salvador Dali fans

I love this guy! His work is so great! Bought the book with intentions of giving as gift but decided to keep. Dali is just "out there" and so unique! I recommend this book if you are an art lover of any kind.

I had seen this book in a hotel lobby and enjoyed reading the introduction and looked on to purchase it. I have the heavy large Dali book, but there's a bit more in this one, and found it well worth the cost.

Paintings, drawings, sculptures, and engravings from a genius and his serious dedication to surrealism. There are seventy eight reproductions of his work, a chronology of his secret life and works, and also an interview with Dali. Some of Dali's finest paintings. What I particularly like is the fact that next to each picture, is the title, and some information or description of the work. This helps to have a good understanding of the work and possibly an insight into what Dali believes.Book is a very nice size and easy to read.A more complete comprehensive collection of works can be found in the 2 Volume set entitled " Dali "- The Paintings (25), approx 780 pages.
