I have been a Nurse for 38 yrs.Dr. Harrison has been brutally truthful as to what really happens in Hospitals. If it had been up to me I would have given Nursing up a long time ago.I love what I do but I spend more time in front of a computer than with my patients.Health Care has become another big business. It's not about the patient anymore.I seriously fear for my children and grandchildren.I couldn't put the book down By the end I would have moved to wherever Dr. Harrison was practicing to be able to work with her.I plan on buying more books to give to friends.May God bless Dr. Harrison in her work.O.
For those unfamiliar with residency, this novel reveals some of the problems inherent in the system. Conformity does not provide the opportunity for new ideas to be explored. It creates a system that perpetuates itself. There can be no progress when the status quo is reinforced.
A must read by anyone but specially, If you have an interest in women care and how hospitals are run in this country.
The description for this book led me to believe it would be about the author's professional experiences. Yeah, there's some of that, which is interesting. However there's a lot about her personal life which I found to be dull. I wanted to hear more about the patients not about child care arrangements and coping with being a single parent of which there was way too much. Although it failed to sustain my interest, it was OK for the 99 cent price.Update: Upon reconsideration. I believe this book would appeal to the single parent trying to juggle home and work as well as those who question the medical system. Unfortunately for the latter, this book is appears to be about circumstances from the '70's when things were much less enlightened. Comparing then and now really gives a perspective on how far things have come.
I enjoyed reading about the medical cases. Thought our heroine had too much of a chip on her shoulder with her attitude of the medical establishment. Surely, there is room for both persuasions here. Midwives do serve their purpose but often times medical intervention is necessary to save the life of mom and baby. I found her kind of whiney.
Since I write medical-based fiction, I'm always looking for research sources. While it's easy to find the facts online, it's also important to understand how a doctor views the world. Dr. Harrison takes the reader through her residency step by step, with details about medical issues, personalities and the impact on her personally.Yes, the book is set in a previous era and there's a fair amount of medical/women's issues politics that might seem out of date. However, not only did I live through this era, but any doctor practicing today was affected by it. Also, the author's writing is compelling and engaging.
Loved this book, very well written. Although this book is written about being a working mother the 70s or 80s, the mountains Michelle faced as a working mother still apply in the 'noughties'!
On the one had the author supposedly loves what she is doing, but at the same time can't stop complaining about her situation.Yes, it's tough to have children and work, and yes it's tough to go through residency. I appreciate the fact that this was written close to the time when "Our Bodies, Ourselves" came out (remember that well), and that obstetrics have come a long way since then, but it just became a very negative read after a while.
