In the fourth book of “The Road To Key West” series, Kansas Stamps and Will Bell once again find themselves hip-deep in madcap adventure – from bizarre to hysterical. The captivating diary of an amateur archeologist sends our intrepid explorers on a journey into the heart of the Panamanian jungle, in search of La cueva de Esmeralda (The Emerald Cave), and a lost Spanish treasure. But local brigand, Tu Phat Shong, and his gang of cutthroats are searching for the same treasure. It’s a cat and mouse game – up the perilous Fangaso River, through the jungle and the boisterous mining towns, and into “The Village of the Witches,” where nothing is as it seems… If that weren’t enough, one of the Caribbean’s nastiest drug lords has a score to settle with our reluctant heroes. (Something to do with an ancient golden medallion they “borrowed.”) The word is out. There’s a price on Kansas and Will’s heads, and a conga line of hit men trailing them. As they careen across the Southern Hemisphere, our adventurers encounter some fascinating ladies as well, and experience an extraordinary romance. Be careful what you wish for… “Somewhere On The Road To Key West” offers the standard plethora of zany characters: Rufus, the mystical Rastaman, who’s convinced that luck is nothing more than “da gods adjusting da rabbit ears on da television of life”, Benny The Rat, a struggling larcenist who’s taking correspondence courses to become a bullfighter, Crazy Eddie and his aging but fabulous “Goose,” and last but not least, “The Griffins.” (There are some things you just don’t mess with – like bubonic plague, nuclear weapons, and The Griffins…) So sit back, pour yourself margarita, and slide into the Caribbean for another wild and crazy caper. You’re somewhere on The Road, again.

Reisig writes about the Florida Keys and el Caribe with the obvious ability that only someone who has immersed themselves in the tropical island culture can. We're sort of an odd sort, down island and Reisig is able to capture not only the ambiance of the crystal clear waters and the jungles of the Caribbean Basin, but also it's people. His characters are obviously a reflection of people he met on the road to Key West and beyond. He sent me an advance copy of this latest work a week ago and of course I set everything aside, including my own writing, to delve into Will and Kansas' next adventure. And what an adventure it was. Treasure? Of course. What adventure into the Spanish Main doesn't have it? Beguiling pretty ladies? Same thing. Enough twists and turns to confuse a python? Oh yeah. And don't forget Will and Kansas' legendary diversion tactics when the bad guys get too close.A word of caution: If you have to work in the morning, don't start reading tonight. As with the others in this series, you simply won't be able to put it down and will find yourself adrift on a backwater river in Panama until Sol again shines through your bedroom window and finds you reading, "The End".For fans of White, Hall, Hiaasen, MacDonald, and Leaonard, you can add another name to your list of favorite tropical writers. Michael Reisig.

I continue to experience excessive frustration as Kansas and Will, our heroes, continue to make questionable life or death decisions that (almost invariably) result in extending the opportunities of their nemeses (the bad 'guys') to hinder their adventure-seeking, treasure-enhancing efforts...I wonder how many of these frustration-inducing adventures Mr. Reisig experienced himself...I plan to return to the final Key West series book after solving Louise Penny's latest Canadian who-done-it...I need the break!

You know about the potato chip commercial touting you can't eat just one, you must eat the whole bag. Reisig's books are like that bag of chips. You cannot read just one of his books, you want to read the whole lot of them. And, you should! Do read them all and you will find what I have discovered. He is a truly gifted writer who has the ability to hold your attention throughout a book, which few writers are able to do. If you like action, comedy, evil villains, beautiful women both good and bad, a little swearing ( e.g. mucking fagnificent, rucking felentless, etc.), and pithy adages ( e.g. depression is simply anger lacking in enthusiasm, or you're never too old to learn something stupid, etc.). You will love Reisig.Add tight writing, well developed plot lines, finely tuned character development, a skill at keeping your reader wanting to know what is coming next and perfectly written action scenes and to laugh out loud each chapter, read Reisig!

Reisig is a wonderful writer who produces great characters in complicated situations mixed with a cross between Indiana Jones and Johnny Depp. Not great literature but tremendous fun! I will read ALL his books! If you look closely at his sentence structure, vocabulary, and paragraph development, you realize that Reisig actually is a darn good writer. But I don't spend a lot of time admiring his form. He's too much fun to spend time on that stuff. I want more of Kansas and Will to say nothing of Crazy Eddie the one-eyed stoned pilot and Rufus the Rastafarian wise man. MORE. WRITE MORE.

I have read other Reisig books and chose it primarily because I enjoyed the others in the Kew West series. I'm not quite half way though this one and find it a bit bizarre, especially w/ one of the main characters being turned into a chicken. Maybe by the end of the book, the author will rationalize and/or explain the transformation, but at this point I think he crossed the line. Still, a good read so far.

They say to "write what you know" and I get the feeling Michael Reisig has had one heckava life! His books convince me he has probably completed his bucket list and then some as he writes of the adventures in the Caribbean as one who is intimately experienced with the pristine waters, sea life, boating, diving, and flying from one death-defying escapade after another. The characters in these exploits exude the eviable love of life and for each other you won't find as dramatically described anywhere else. Will Bell and Kansas Stamps go from one exotic adventure to another in this 4th of the Road to Key West series that includes all our favorites from Crazy Eddie and his Grumman Goose to Rufus, the Rastaman. In this installment, Will and Kansas are introduced to the possibility of a lost Spanish treasure in The Emerald Cave of the Panamanian jungle. But it won't be easy to get away with it as they aren't the only ones looking for the fabulous riches secreted away and Tu Phat Shong and his people aren't nice! The boys are still trying to avoid a nasty drug lord they bested recently who would like to get some payback along with a medallion our boys "borrowed." Then there is Benito. Ah, Benito; he is taking a correspondence course to become a bullfighter. Huh? But the best? It's the Griffins! Now there is some serious trouble! Will and Kansas have known each other long enough to pull some major bone-headed stunts and get away with it--now they use their history to create diversions to escape some harrowing fixes. I love it when the good guys win! (And deep down--they are) You will, too! I downloaded this installment as a free Kindle offering and never miss the chance to get another Michael Reisig book. Get in on the fun and join me!
