I was moved to read this sweet account of a mother-turned-grandmother's journey. This is the kind of story we hope to all tell our families about our grandparents. I learned so much about love and kindness and parenting, from such a savvy writer!
if you are a grandmother (or grandfather) who doesn't think you need to read this book, please think again! You have missed out on a very enjoyable reading experience. Not only that, you have missed out on some very excellent advice for being a grandmother in a time of high tech gadgetry and personal disconnection from the closeness that used to exist in families before the high tech generation came on the scene. Personally, I found her book to be just as applicable to grandfathers! Marty takes you into her world by telling easy to read, and very easy to relate to, personal short stories. She has taken her grandmothering experiences and tells those experiences through forty-two short stories that all end with sound advice that can be used by any grandparent. The stories let you into her world on the ground level and, as you read about her world and her suggestions, you will find yourself comparing those experiences to your own world with your grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her book and I highly recommend it to every grandparent, whether they are waiting for the first grandchild to be born or dealing with the multiple grandchildren they already have. Relating to the grandchildren of today's world with iPhones, texting, computers, facebook, and HDTV wide screen TV's hooked to blue ray disc players is quite a challenge!excerpted from a review of Generation G on my blog and website: [...]
This wonderful book, Generation G: Advice For Savvy Grandmothers Who Will Never Go Gray by Marty Norman, is about the wonderful opportunity of being a GRANDmother.Generation G covers many topics facing grandmothers today, such as: dealing with aging, choosing the name our grandchildren will call us, creating new family traditions to meet the changing times, learning how to be a support system for our children and grandchildren, the importance of listening, passing on a legacy, and much, much more.At times the book will make you laugh, at other times you will be moved to tears, and at still other times, you will be scrambling for your pen and note-pad to jot down notes.Marty shows us that grandmothers of this generation have much to offer, and she puts a positive slant on everything. Instead of old, she suggests that we use the word mature; instead of gray, silver; and my personal favorite--instead of saggy, soft. This book is a delightful and uplifting read that will challenge you to throw off the shabby shawl of stereotypes, and become the grandmother that makes a difference in the lives of her grandchildren! This would be a great gift for any grandmother or a great read for current grandmothers (or those like me who look forward to that chapter in their life).
The subtitle of this book, Advice For Savvy Grandmothers Who Will Never Go Gray, gives you an idea of the humor you will find throughout its pages. Each chapter has a verse under its title and relates to the principle she is explaining in that chapter. She gives just enough personal stories as examples that by the end of the book you feel like she is a lifelong friend. The chapters are written in a friendly non-judgmental manner. It is easy to read and follow. At the next baby shower bring this book along for the Grandmother to be. I think it is a must read for all Grandmothers, especially those who are young at heart.I was given this book by christianreviewofbooks.com to review.
Generation G by Marty Norman is an excellent book on grandparenting. In the first part of the book, Marty lets us into her world and experience her joy upon first hearing that she would be a grandmother. Later on, she gives extremely useful tips on grandmothering. I found her advice useful and very positive. The subtitle of her book, "Advice for Savvy Grandmother Who Will Never Go Gray" tells us alot about the author and the lifestyle she is suggesting for grandmothers, or soon to be grandmothers. This is a wonderful, insightful book and should be a "must have" for any grandmother or grandmother-to-be.
Beautifully written and even a little poetic at times, this book is arranged into essays about growing older, motherhood, and becoming a grandparent. It offers gentle advice, enjoyable and humorous personal stories, and lighthearted encouragement for those women who find themselves transitioning from motherhood to grandmother-hood. Generation G would make a unique and delightful gift--and the price is right too!
Generation G, by Author Marty Norman, is an excellent book that gives advice for savvy grandmothers. Grandmothers of this generation are different than grandmothers of the past. Things and times have changed. Grandmothers are not like the images we have of them sitting in a rocking chair, in the kitchen with their apron, or sitting on the back porch watching the world go by. Grandmothers of today are active. They travel, teach, preach, have jobs and stay in shape Grandmothers of today are savvy.Marty Norman writes and gives advice on how a grandmother can reach her grandchildren in a way that is not preaching...but teaches how a grandmother can win them over in wisdom, hope, strength & love. A grandmother has many opportunities to help, teach, play and learn with their grandchildren. The book, Generation G, gives ideas on how to keep in contact with grandchildren that live in another state. This book also gives ideas on family traditions, play times, vacations, etc.The greatest part about Generation G is that it helps you, the Grandmother, find your own style and footprint that will reach your grandchildren in years to come. As a grandmother, this is a book that I highly recommend. I have taken notes, made plans and have started making my own legacy with my grandchildren. Buy Generation G....it will be one of the best decisions you've ever made.
