This book gets straight to the point. It's short but very informative. It took me three days to read. I feel that no one has any business in trying anything out (generally speaking) unless they've done their research.
This book is a real gem, with detailed summary descriptions of several dozen known and suspected psilocybes. Authet willis uses very scientific terminology in describing each psilocybe-- considering the consequences of a false identification, it's important for the author to be as precise in his descriptions as possible-- but there are also several helpful pages of charts at the end of the book which explain what all of this technical jargon means.This is far and away the best field guide to psilocybe mushrooms that I've seen so far. I can truly recommend this work without reservation!
Thank heavens I didn't pay for this. I can find the same information, better written and well organized, for free. The 20 minutes I spent skimming through this book was 20 minutes I wish I'd have spent reading something useful. I give it 2 stars only because it did in fact contain *some* information... just not enough that I'd recommend anyone bother reading it.
I saw a TV documentary about indigenous South American tribes using psychoactive fungus that really piqued my interest on the topic. This book dives right into all the information you want to know about these peculiar fungus. It opens with the history of their use and an explanation about their psychoactive chemical, psilocybin. Then it goes into the juicy info -- what it's like to use these fungi, the different effects, dangers, and the legality. I like that the book takes a scientific approach that is accessible, even for someone without a science background such as myself. Definitely a great read if you're interested in these peculiar mushrooms!
