This book by Karen Terry has the merits of being informative and current (insofar as it was published as a 2013, second edition). It has several styles within the book, such as the use of data charts, "Did you know?" vignettes, highlighted but brief case studies, and discussion questions. The book starts with the definition of sexual offences, moving to an historical account of sexual behaviour, and the etiology of sexually deviant behaviour and the cycle of sexual offending. The second part of the book, is concerned mainly with the offenders themselves. It covers the types of offenders including paedophiles, juvenile offenders, and female offenders. The third and final segment deals with the treatment and management of sex offenders.The material covered was extensive. However, Terry had obviously used phrases from other sources without placing them within quotation marks (the instances I found were within acceptable practice and cannot be said to be plagiarism) and in so doing, words were left out or did not make sense. An example can be found at page 3 - "and yet this legislation creates significant financial strain". No legislation had been referred to so we do not know what "this legislation" was. Perhaps the fault might also be placed on the editors. References to authors with multiple works cited could also have been clearer, e.g. Zgoba had co-authored two books in 2008 and one of Terry's references was not clear as to which of the two she meant. The reader has to check the context before he could guess which the intended reference was.Content-wise, certainly worthy of four stars.
When I work in the field its important for me to know the motivations behind behaviors and how they are lived out. This book is very detailed in the thought processes of offenders which is helpful in assessing their life and environment. Very helpful.
The textbook was late and some of the pages were not printed to well. I would recommend anyone interested in Human Sexuality to purchase and read this book.
