This genealogy is a study in the old world as well as the new. Extensive references have been given, countless books have been consulted, nearly all procured from New England Historical and Genealogical Society, and to "Colonial Families," compiled by the New York Historical Society. The author depended on printed records, and when authorities differed, a conclusion was reached by critical comparison and the weighing of evidence. Many family records never printed before have been used. Mrs. Rixford, a noted genealogist and author of several works, including "Three Hundred Colonial Ancestors and War Service," has traced from Cerdic, first of the West Saxon Kings, 495, through Alfred the Great, 849, Robert Bruce, King of Scotland, King Henry I, II and III, King Edward I, II and III, also many other royal lines through Charlemagne, Louis I, Earls of Warren, Dukes of Normandy, Royal House of Portugal, House of Capet, Counts of Anjou, Kings of Jerusalem, and many other royal families too numerous to name. She has also included several Mayflower lines connected to all members of the Vermont Society of Mayflower Descendants, who are direct descendants of these lines. Those with ancestry to the Earls of Warren have been connected up to the royal families. The book also includes the ancestry of Gen. George Washington, the first President of the United States, traced back 1,000 years to the Earl of Orkney Isles, the founder of the Washington family. It also contains the ancestry of Gen. Nathaniel Greene, who ranked next in military fame to George Washington. Other families addressed in this volume include: Aquitaine, Angouleme, Anjoy, Baskerville, Beauchamp, Bray, Bulkeley, Capet, Castille, Cheney, James Chilton, Francis Cooke, Courtenay, Rixford, De Vere, Farleigh-Hungerford, Devereux, Douglas, Drake, Eaton, Ferrers, Fitz-Alan, Flanders, Graves, Greene, Gregory, Hainault, Heydon, Johnson, William Latham, Lawrence (John and Isaac), Lisle, Marshall, Milbourne, Moore, Mowbray, Phelps, Port, Province, Rogers, Russell, Seymour, De Spineto, Smith and Georges, Sir Henry Smith, Stanley, Throckmorton, Tailefer, Vermandois, Warren, Washburn, Washington, Winnington (Wynnington), Gov. Thomas Welles, Whitney, William the Conqueror, Winslow, and Wyne.

As other reviewers have said, this book will be of limited usefulness to many researchers, especially those with some experience. Unless you happen to share some ancestors with the author, you will probably find little to nothing new. Much of the information seems to be directly copied from Burke's and de Brett's peerage books. If you have access to either of those, you will probably find them much more useful. In addition to the very limited scope of the book, the illustrations--genealogical trees--range in quality from so-so to virtually useless, due to their reduced size and poor-quality typography.Again as mentioned, the book is very outdated; there is much more information--of generally better quality--to be found online from sources such as Wikipedia and a multitude of various British Crown-sponsored sites.

Not great, very incomplete. Can be informative if an ancestor is found in the book's contents, but many families are not in it, and unfortunately this is not known until after the book is purchased and reviewed.

This is about certain families only and is not a broadly researched book. And what work was done was done some time ago and is not reliable.

This book only pertains to the specific family tree of Elizabeth Rixford. The reference to Mayflower families consists of her own families genealogy and lists of Mayflower passengers & signers of the Mayflower compact. If you have no relation to her family it will not help you at all.

This book is for less serious researchers or those who like to chuckle. Mrs. Rixford has never met an ancestor she didn't like! A good example of this is 1. Richard Warren of the Mayflower, his origins are not know according the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. 2. Her Johnson line; she has her line as Humphrey, John of Roxbury, Isaack Johnson esq. & Arabella Fiennes Clinton. Sounds very good, until you find that Isaack & Arabella died without heirs, within months of arriving in the new world. A few lies are correct, the majority are not.

A reference book only - short on vital records - a good "jumping off" point for research into many royal family lines. A bit out dated, however a well intentioned look at multiple family lines.

Although this book is as old as I am, I found it to be most helpful to me. Most of the families detailed, including one Mayflower passenger, I am descended from, which makes me a distant relative of Elizabeth M Leach Rixford, the author. I even was able to glean a few new (to me) facts, which I have added to my research. I found the format of the book easy to use and it is well written. I would certainly recommend this book to other amateur genealogists like myself.

Was not aware that this was in fact the genealogy of a particular family and not of mine.. The more historical informarion I could have found in other material. It did however make informative reading.
