I breezed through this book, overlooking numerous grammatical errors. But when I got to Chapter 29 and read where Kitty Hawk was in South Carolina (instead of North Carolina) and that the 852 foot flight took 59 minutes (instead of seconds), I began to question how many other errors, mistakes and omissions were in the book. In context, this book could have easily been written by spending a few hours online, cutting and pasting. Overall, not reliable.
Reading books about our world history is always a good thing to do. It’s very entertaining to read a book like this and at the same time you’ll learn things that you didn’t know existed. I usually read a book like this whenever I am bored or have a lot of free time to burn and I can proudly say that I really enjoyed reading this book. The 50 things everyone should know about our global history are worth spending time reading! It is indeed a good read and I highly recommend it to all the people who love reading history books.
For a brief summary, this book has been quite a read. It has taken readers to 50 of the most important events in world history, and all this in just one sitting too. This makes this book so convenient but a very good reading experience as well. Reading historical pieces will always prove useful and helpful, since the modern day people use those learning to improve the present and even prepare for a better future. The book has been written and arranged well and I think, for obvious reasons, it has been well-researched too.
This book is horribly mistitled. I guess it qualifies as "world" history if the world is Europe. This is what passes as world history in a "West and the rest" approach to World History. In what sense are "The Millenium and the Y2k Bug" even worthy of mention? World War 2 is presented as being all about Germany and Japan is barely mentioned. And NO MONGOLS, The Norman Conquest, but nothing on the spread of Islam. Marco Polo but no Ibn Battuta or Xuanzang. Better choices for a quick read on real world history would be "This Fleeting World" by David Christian or "World History: the basics" by Peter Stearns; both are about 100 pages. Also excellent, but a bit longer is "The Human Web" by William McNeil and J.R. McNeil.
Spanning the breadth of world history is an intimidating endeavour, but this breezy little guide highlights some intriguing nuggets along the way. I've withheld stars based on the presence of typos and a rather naive tone. Anything of this sort will be extremely selective, but what is there is enough to spark one's own interest into further study.
Didn't really touch on the Vietnam War. Some spelling errors. Could have expanded on some more subjects and not so much on others. But I did learn some things I didn't know.
Very brief and mostly focused on western civilizations and more recent history. Did not focus on world history or early history as much. Still a great starting point.
A quick synopsis of world history. 50 things are a start, but not all are accurately portrayed and misses quite a bit of history in that brief overview.
