Full disclosure, I know Drew Smith--and have his earlier book as well. Now that I'm retired, I can FINALLY get organized with all my genealogy files/books/papers/photographs. I love the real life examples he uses, and it makes it feel like you are sitting down over a cup of coffee and a friend making 'gentle' suggestions on how to improve your genealogical research. Very descriptive chapters and arranged and presented in a thoroughly logical manner. Very helpful for a beginner, and for someone like me with quite a few years of researching experience---it is extremely beneficial!Better get back to my organizing!!
Just finished reading this fantastic book. About half way through I was not really gaining a lot of helpful information, but it did validate many of the organizing techniques that I use. Then in the last few chapters many of his techniques started to take on more meaning to me. In 222 pages and eleven chapters Drew has brought to life the meaning of organization for genealogists and researchers. He acknowledges that we all have our own style of organizing our work and there is no one way to do so. One thing that is a great addition to the book is the opportunity to download many of his charts and forms. I wish there was a list of all of the great online resources that he provides links to, but these can be found throughout the book.Having moved recently, I find the book very useful as I re-organize my office for future use.
Even when you have been doing this for decades and have a rhythm built and really have organization down to a science, Drew is able to throw some light into one of those corners that you really did not fully understand in terms that finally make sense. From the simplest thing of getting the old files that you do not use out of your current work space to how to be more efficient in the use of digital storage, Drew addresses it all. Thank you for the kick (I have an empty file drawer in my desk, another half empty drawer dedicated to projects, and my Evernote library actually makes a great deal more sense and I can more easily find what I stashed there.
This book’s title is kind of misleading. It’s really about being a more awesome, more efficient genealogist. I expected a focus on organizing your actual genealogical files, and that’s in there. But the author's s real focus was on streamlining every genealogy-related thought and activity you could possible have. It’s so comprehensive that if you can’t get some value out of it, you’re probably not a genealogist at all. From emails to social media to research trips to volunteer activities, everything you'll do as a family historian is covered here. I'm an extremely organized person to begin with, but I still got a ton of value out of reading this book.
I bought the Kindle version from ( I also have the print version from a different supplier). This is not a book on how to do genealogy research as such. It is a book on organising yourself, your environment, your thought process so you can become a more effective researcher. With organisation you won't buy that same certificate twice, you will be able to find where you obtained that piece of information. Most importantly in today's really busy lives you will be able to find time and be effective in your research because you will be able to find that document, that scanned photo that file when replying to a cousin contact. You will be able to make the best use of time on a research trip or in that stolen afternoon at the archives. If you implement even some of the processes in the book you will find more time to do your genealogy research and achieve your research outcomes.
As a 3rd Year hobbyist who has become aware of the limitations of some of my "newbie" systems, I needed some guidance that could take me to a new level of efficiency and focus in genealogy. The best part was that Drew Smith built upon some of what I already had in place, making recommendations for additional steps and processes seem do-able and logical as an evolution.Great templates to use, too.
As an archivist in a county archives, part of my daily job is to organize historical/genealogical records. After reading Drew Smith's book I was elated to see the references to using archival materials to genealogists to help them organize their genealogy records. Drew Smith gives us all great advice for organizing all aspects of our genealogy research and our genealogy lives. Thank You Drew!
As I began my genealogy research I wondered how I should organize the "stuff" I found online. I ordered this book - and yest there are some good ideas but organizing should fit your style not be forced into someone else's style. That said, there are some wonderful tips and suggestion you can take and tweak to fit your needs.
