'In this record of a life-long love affair with the sea, Tim Winton's prose ripples, shimmers and surges with awe and respect for how the ocean has not only sustained him physically and emotionally but determined the very rhythms of his life.' Fiona Capp, The Age On childhood holidays to the beach the sun and surf kept Tim Winton outside in the mornings, in the water; the wind would drive him indoors in the afternoons, to books and reading. This ebb and flow of the day became a way of life. In this beautifully delicate memoir, Tim Winton writes about his obsession with what happens where the water meets the shore – about diving, dunes, beachcombing – and the sense of being on the precarious, wondrous edge of things that haunts his novels. Complemented by the breathtaking photographs of Narelle Autio, Land's Edge is a celebration of the coastal life and those who surrender themselves to it.   'Winton's homage to the ocean and his childhood … A book to return to again and again.' Matt Condon, Sun Herald 'A love letter to the beach, an enchanting celebration of life on the edge.' Sydney Morning Herald

Tim WInton ahd done it again, capturing the essence of the wild wilderness that is Western Australia. His depth of seeing the unseen and making the reader feel the wind ruffling their hair, the sun shearing the matrix of existence with at stark light that can only exist in Tim Winton's writing. Even the chill of the endless ocean can be felt and the grains of the timeless eternal sandy beaches of the vast Western Australia can be felt between the readers toes and they read his work.Childhood memories are shiny, sparkling words, sentences and paragraphs with muti-facitted images projected from a prose so effective that any more would kill the images instantly and any less would be a jumble of incoherent sentences. For me Tim Winton is the epitome of a contemporary Australia writer. And a MUST

Tim Winton's love, his near obsession with the sea and coastal life we know from his fiction. This tender, delicate, lyrical memoir is a song to this life-style. Australians are a coastal people - they live on the edge of things - and the beach, in Australia, is the landscape equivalent of the veranda; a veranda at the edge of the continent. I love his views of the ocean and the beach, his love song to it, his tender descriptions of the brine and the beach, the wind and the waves.

A glorious account of a man's lifetime relationship with the sea. As essential to his life as breathing or eating. He echoes that peculiarly Australian sentiment (Western Australia to be precise) of how their lives are entangled with such an immense force of nature. To be enjoyed for sure, but in an instant can be terribly unforgiving of any lack of care, capacity or respect.A very good read.

Being a big fan of Tim Winton's writing, I was not disappointed with this memoir. Beautifully written, in his familiar style, he gives the reader more than just a mental picture of his young life; just like in his novels, he manages to impart the moods, feelings and atmosphere of each place and situation, as he experienced it himself. My only criticism is that perhaps it's too short!
