Honestly, I don't give many books 5 stars, nor do I give many glowing reviews, but Mosby really did an outstanding job putting this book together. The format is friendly, the data is accurate, and the tests are all relevant in hospital or clinical settings. Great book and an invaluable reference for nurses and laboratorians alike!
Yhis book is an excellent reference for diagnostic tests. It is easy to use. It gives you the FACTS you need to know without have to read through a billion pages. I bought tis book 15 years ago for LPN school and I just bought the 2007 edition for RN school it is a life saver. I have used this book many times through the years for work and school and I recommend it highly.
This is the best source of information about lab tests and lab test results I have found. A description of each test is given with its related physiology, procedure, and factors that may effect the test results. Most importantly the normal range for each test is given, broken down by sex and age in many cases. This is often much better than the medical laboratory provided ranges. A list of possible causes of abnormal findings is provided but no detail is provided. Imaging studies are also covered with a description of each process. There is a good description of the lumbar puncture (spinal tap) that outlines the various procedures, normal results, reasons to not take the test, possible complications, and after effects. Endoscopies, throat cultures nuclear studies among others are also included. However, one should have a basic knowledge of anatomy and biology to get the most from this book.
I got this book because I am a nursing student and I thought it would supplement my classes. I had no idea exactly how useful it would be. This is the PERFECT reference for every test. It gives more information than my textbooks even give. It doesn't only contain lab draws but also colonoscopy, CT scans etc. It doesn't skimp on information. The book is physically on the smaller side, which is good because you can keep it with you when you need it. However, it contains all of the information you need regarding testing.The book provides how the test is performed, normal ranges for adults, older adults, and children, as well as a narrative description of the purpose and procedure of the test. This description can range from a half page to 5 or 6 pages of very useful, concise information. It gives a great picture of what the test consists of and what is being evaluated. Pagana & Pagana also describe what might cause variations in test results. Finally, at the end of each entry they include a list of what increased levels and then decreased levels might indicate, in order of prevalence. I have used this book countless times and it helped me understand better than any textbook could. I'd also consider it very easy to comprehend. It's a great resource. Lastly, it has contained every test I have ever tried to look up, even uncommon maternal blood draws that I could not find by searching online.
This reference manual did not have nearly as many tests as I thought it would...using it on a med surge floor I thought it would have more common tests but apparently not. It has your basic electrolyte and CBC panels as well as EKGs and others, but nothing very complicated.
I am an NP student and I always take this book to clinical. It explains the purpose of the tests and the meaning of the results. Very helpful when interpreting lab results.
This is the best book of it's type that I have seen. It is very complete and easy to use. I grab it frequently when nurses or patients need info about tests
I am a nurse practitioner student and I bought this book to compliment my textbooks. This book is pretty interesting and breaks the material down into a format that is easy to understand. I have used other lab manual books that were not interesting to read at all! This book is much better in my opinion. The book is small enough that it can easily fit into a bag, but not so small that the print is impossible to read. The cover is paperback, but very durable. I would recommend this product!
