Of the several Oxford hardcover dictionaries, this is the most disappointing. The reasons are simply:1) There is so little content the font is large and there is a great deal of unnecessary white space. That is positive if you are in need of a new eyeglasses prescription, but otherwise the book looks like a child's dictionary. This volume could have been half the size and save a lot of trees, were it not hiding its lack of text.2) The quality and quantity of definitions vary wildly. Often well-known words are delved into unnecessarily while other more difficult or obscure words are barely addressed at all.3) Synonyms choices are random--which words contain thesaurus entries is always a surprise. Not the kind that anyone needs.4) A pedestrian "Language Guide" is located in the middle of the book -- I kid you not. You must thumb through the volume to pages with a a bit of gray color at the edge of the binding to find the guide. Ironically, Oxford buried this guide following the word "juxtapose." That is a horrible user interface choice for a book, but at least there's a little humor in the error.Essentially, this book is neither a useful dictionary nor a useful thesaurus. I'd recommend getting a separate dictionary and thesaurus. This volume is cheap enough but it won't service your needs effectively. Indeed, I will be returning my copy.I regret panning the work of a no-doubt superb linguistic team on a just-published project, but this volume was not a product for which to be proud. Oxford, what were you thinking?
I don't know why I waited so long to purchase this. I had it in my cart for about six months. I purchased a "Desk" edition for someone I study the Bible with. I was highly impressed with it and decided to get myself this larger edition. I don't think I could be more pleased. I wish I didn't put off this purchase.
I've been through 18 dictionaries in the past four decades, but this new Oxford American Dictionary and Thesaurus is by far the easiest to read and a delight to use. The definitions are succinct and easy to understand. The thesaurus is not only a good way to find a useful alternative word, it also helps illuminate the defined word. I like it so well that I've bought a total of ten copies so far and gave them to my writer friends and several students. So, yes, I highly recommend this dictionary/thesaurus.
I found this book very helpful. this has provided me with most of the necessary information i will need now and in the future.i highly recommend this book students and other users. As far as , you are the best..
Absolutely satisfying for everybody. It is concise but including everything of significance for each entry. Fully comprehensive. I think no nuance or subtlety in the English language has been forsaken. Congratulations to the editor.
I love this dictionary and use it everyday. Currently I am in school for my doctorate and it is so resourceful.
I was very impressed and I just love it. I use it for all my word problems. It was in excellent condition and I no longer have to carry a dictionary and thesaurus, now I have both in one awesome book. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs more than one meaning for a word, and also like having the word origin also. EXCELLENT!!!!
I just love this dictionary. Easy to read print-easy to understand definition. Has synonyms and antonyms in a box under the definition of the word. I will be selling all my old dictionaries in a yard sale.
