I have been a paramedic since the mid 80's, this book was required for recert of PHTLS card. Unfortunately, by the time recert comes around again it will be time for the next edition. Good, informative book and should be in library of your department, but not necessarily in a personal one. It also comes with computer disc that helps if this is your first time, or trauma isn't your strong point. PHTLS is similar to the other alphabet soup courses like BTLS, AMLS, ATLS etc... Deals with trauma. I do recommend however, that all EMS providers join the NAEMT as it is our voice that makes changes happen.

Book arrived in record time! Exactly what I was looking for - used for a current (3/25/12-3/26/12) PHTLS certification course. I'm particularly fond of the tables on various pages that take large amounts of data & present it in an easy to focus on & find format - ie. mL blood loss amounts in various areas/extremities/etc. Extremely valuable information within, though I did not have time to check out the accompanying CD prior to the course I'm sure it contains even more useful/helpful info. Great book - highly recommend for advancing your knowledge base. (Give yourself a few days or more to become familiar/refresh your memory with the highlights in this book prior to taking the course exam and you'll do fine!)

Took the course this last weekend at UCLA-Daniel Freeman. The course was good, got lots of hands on scenarios, but the stuff in the book was gold. The chapter on kinematics of trauma was better than my whole EMT school on understanding trauma. Coolest thing about it in my personal opinion? It defines Trauma.

Taking this book for a promotional test. Most of the others taking the test are EMT-B. I'm a paramedic, and was once PHTLS certified so I've got a little more background. This books is long winded, and over-blown. It's painful to read because it rambles on and on. A newer edition, I would expect, would just have updated treatment findings. I think they justified this edition by padding it with more fluff.

Excellent resource for emergency medical treatment. As a rural family nurse practitioner I often see injuries that should have gone to the ER but present to the clinic. This book gives me the resources to provide care until we can get them to the ER.

Not much to review; if you are looking for this, it means you're taking the class or refresher. You need the book. sells the book. You know the rest. That said, I AM a fan of NAEMT's stuff; much preferred over AHA where applicable, but that's because I'm a pre-hospital provider.

Easy to read with Big fonts and lots of side notes/info that touches on the subject at hand.I'd forgotten about most of this stuff in the book, glad I read it. Great refresher!

Well designed and easy to follow. Provided new information for me, which I appreciated. I would recommend it for further one's EMS education and career.
