Awarded first place in the 2013 AJN Book of the Year Awards in the Environmental Health category, and second place in the Community-Public Health category What a wonderful resource!"--Doody's Medical Reviews "In this third editionÖDr. Veenema continues her mission to help our nation's nurses develop the knowledge and skills needed to efficiently and effectively respond to disasters.ÖMany times nurses assume that they aren't emergency responders, so they don't need to understand how the system works. When a disaster strikes a communityówhether it's a bus accident, a tornado, a hurricane or terrorist attackónurses will be on the front lines helping those who are in need. To protect themselves, their families and their communities, nurses need to understand the principles and content of this comprehensive textbook. I encourage all nurses to develop the knowledge and skills presented here that are needed to achieve the vision of resilient communities outlined in the National Health Security Strategy." From the Foreword by Ann R. Knebel, RN, DNSc, FAAN Deputy Director with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response "The third edition of Disaster Nursing and Emergency Preparedness was confronted with the daunting task of both summarizing the many important new findings that have now become available through extensive research and the experience of public health practitioners and yet maintain the convenience and user-friendliness of the first two editions. Dr. Veenema has succeeded in accomplishing this magnificently. The third edition Ö has almost double the number of pages compared with the first edition, including a much stronger and expanded clinical management section to address clinical situations not frequently encountered by nurses...The reader is provided with substantially greater coverage of the needs of children and adolescents following the recommendations of the National Commission on Children and Disasters (2010)...[This book] will continue to serve as both a timely and comprehensive text for this nation's 2.7 million nurses and for educating the next generation of nursing professionals." From the Foreword by Eric K. Noji, MD, MPH Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Ret.) Washington, DC "The contributing authors read like "Who's Who" of the disaster leaders. They lend their special expertise and insights which are supported and elucidated by cogent learning strategies in the use of case studies, side bars, student questions, and packed content in all areas of disaster participation, preparedness, policies, and research. Many teachers, students, practitioners, and policy makers will find this edition a treasure trove of new information, ideas and ideologies and will use this volume as a text, a reference, and resource for the challenging work they do in disaster preparedness and practice. For over ten years [this book]has been the Hallmark Text in its field and this edition proves to be the best ever." From the Foreword by Loretta C. is always amazing with their book rentals. I've never had any issues. This rating is the book itself. It's such a difficult read. The book is all print, no pictures and everything is in black and white. It would have been nice to have some pictures and interesting things to look at. The book has its interesting parts but overall I hated having to open it to read for class.
This was required for my BSN studies. Really thick, heavy book that covers the numerous and varied areas of disaster and emergency response and preparedness quite thoroughly. Even my mom who's a cook found it interesting to look through.
I've had great Kindle books before but this one was awful. Although it had all the information and the search engine was easy to use, it was truly difficult to connect to my lecture due to the fact that it did not provide accurate page numbers. The pages were off by number and visual. Please fix this and it'll be much better. Also, to the book-makers: this is the most BORING book ever.
Book was wrapped in saran wrapping and put in a box full of green peanuts. It arrived during the second day of my estimated arrival time, which is good since I needed the book before the class, which was 3 days later. Prompt and fast. Will buy my books from this seller again if they have the books I need and is well within the price range I'm looking for. This book seems to be a good resource for my class.
This book is as dry and mind-numbing as it could possibly be. I defy anyone to read this and remain conscious. It is like propofol in paper form. Apparently I have the version where many, but not all, typos and layout errors were corrected. There is nothing in this book that you could not find online. If you need a textbook with a theory-level, buzzword heavy approach to disaster management, this is it.If you want actual skills and strategies, there are many better resources and self-paced online classes available via FEMA. If it is required by your RN or BSN program, like mine, than here you go. Good luck.
Required for my studies as an RN. Latest and up to date version of what you need to know when working in any disaster situation.
This book is wonderful and so insightful! sent it so fast to me and for a cheap price too!
This book is excellent- well written and fascinating to read. A must have for all nurses.
