They learn that someone has made the discovery of the century that could change life for every person on the planet and there are those prepared to go to war over it. You will see the normal greed aspect that fuels research and discovery. But you will also see, in rather poetic terms, that desperation also fuels research and discovery. Relationships blossom, new friends are made and, as with real life, we must say good bye to others.Leap is an exciting sequel to Michael Grumley's Breakthrough. I was highly anticipating this sequel and was not disappointed. Leap continues the Breakthrough story line but it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. However, Breakthrough will give you some foundation that will deepen your understanding and give you a richer reading experience. I read Leap in one sitting, I could not put it down. This novel is full of leaps. Not small leaps but huge leaps in science and technology.
LEAP is the sequel to BREAKTHROUGH and the predecessor to CATALYST. All three are part of one large story arc. This time around, exactly what the leap refers to is sort of ambiguous. It could be the extension to primates of the computer-enhanced interspecies language translator for dolphin-speak that was a main focus of BREAKTHROUGH, it could refer to the discovery (by a few independent entities) of a clue to dramatic life extending biology, it could refer to something that Palin (see BREAKTHROUGH) said to our hero, Clay, or it might be something else entirely.LEAP has the same excitement, fast pacing and interesting mix of SEALs and dolphins, and now apes and monkeys that were evident in BREAKTHROUGH. I very much enjoyed the plot (and/or extension of the plot) and will say no more about that, which is much less than Is usual for me in this review, because I want to explain (to the reader and hopefully to the author) how I came to give a novel that I liked so much only three stars.The answer is, in a two words, the writing. It's not very good, verging on bad. There are several examples of atrocious grammar (all of this also applies to BREAKTHROUGH), numerous typos, extraneous apostrophes where the text calls only for a simple plural, and endless repetitions of the word "smirk" or "smirking" in completely inappropriate contexts. Seriously Mr. Grumley - look up smirk in a dictionary. As Inigo Montoya said in the movie of THE PRINCESS BRIDE, "I do not think that word means what you think it does".There is also a failure to delineate scene changes within chapters.
