Available To Downloads

JL Tate has been reassigned to a semi permanent office in Pecos, but he finds trouble before he even gets near the town limits. With more than a few thousand square miles to patrol and keep order in, he doesn’t figure to spend much time with his feet propped up on a desk. It’s a big job, but the brass believes he can do it, or at least they hope he can. While JL escorts a prisoner to El Paso, a renegade gang, lead by a mad man carry out a raid on Pecos. The only definite purpose for the raid seemed to be, “to kill that big mouthed Ranger” or shoot anyone else handy. Tate was on the next east bound out of El Paso. He checks his weapons, tugs his hat on, and saddles up for a long hard ride.He finds unexpected help from his old partner, Spade Carson and a rookie Ranger in training, a nice lad with a lot to learn. If trying to hunt down a gang on a rampage with an untested green Ranger isn’t enough, he’s given another chore. A sweet young thing from back east, has taken on a mission to find two relatives who were last seen in the area. The area in question being, West Texas and Southern New Mexico.

This book is written in the first person and written in a way that it has a humorous touch all through it. I have read all of Lou Bradshaw's books and have enjoyed them all, in fact, anyone who enjoys well written western story should take a look at Lou's books. There is a bunch. The basics of this story is that three very wealthy eastern dudes go west on a lark to do what they think will be fun. Killing, stealing, etc is no fun the citizens and the Texas Rangers are out to put a permanent stop to it

I love westerns, but this book had so many mistakes it distracted from the story. Somehow a character named Rusty becomes Dusty before going back to Rusty. Also, a double action revolver does not have to be cocked...it makes it easier but its not required like a single action.

Plot a little weak. Rich kids gone bad. Good family home. Early meeting young men and JL a hint of what was to follow. Psychosis sets in or just good boys gone bad, The heroine is on a time constrained mission. She knows the bad guys. That was the weak part for me. A sick aunt sends her to get rich young men that are on a lark. Messenger and guide is a good story by itself. The young men die simultaneous to their aunt in an unlikely scenario. JL falls in love with young woman that has to return east. More to follow in future book, I hope.

Lou Bradshaw writes very entertaining and enjoyable westerns. Often, there are characters you've met in previous books. Tater (nickname for Tate) is our familiar friend from a couple of books from the Ben Blue series. He's now a full blown Texas Ranger and still using home spun logic to figure out the right direction to take to get to a just resolution in life. The talk is very homey, the characters are memorable, and the book is worth the price of admission to the old west world of Lou Bradshaw.

If you haven't read any of Lou's books you are in for a delightful surprise and will be easily hooked and eagerly awaiting each new book. Take the plunge and start from his first Ben Blue book and get caught up. If your are looking for books with explicit sex then don't bother and if you are looking for blood and gore don't bother either but for real to life westerns they can't be beat.

Reads just like someone is telling a story around a camp fire. Characters are believable, not merely cardboard cutouts. An engaging story. The heat, dust, spaciousness, and beauty of the desert Southwest come to life.

I enjoyed this book by Lou. J L Tate(Tater) is definitely growing as a Ranger! He's tough when he has to be, and keeps the excitement coming! Of course there is also humor when needed! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a real good western!

Well I guess this is the last book written by Lou Bradshaw. I am hoping it is not. It does stand with his others and I do hope that at 75+ he has a few more. Keep writing and riding down the trail Lou...
