Green Immigrants: The Plants That Transformed America (A Harvest/HBJ Book)
Available To Downloads

Most of our cultivated flowers, vegetables, fruits, grains, and fodder, and nearly 70% of our weeds have come into the United States from other parts of the world. Based on years of research in libraries, botanical gardens, agricultural centers, and universities, Green Immigrants devotes itself to this important but previously neglected chapter in the American saga. Here are the history and romance, legend and folklore, of 85 plants-from a for Apple to Z for Zinnia-relating how they arrived here, probably have fared since, and how they have changed our nation. The individual tales that Mrs. Haughton tells with such infectious enthusiasm eventually constitute a single, much larger tail. Extraordinarily rich, varied, and entertaining, it weaves in countless bits of human history, going back to the beginnings of the race and casting a glance toward its possible future. Green Immigrants is an indispensable book for readers of all ages with any interest whatever in the natural world, but will fascinate even those who don't know daisy from a dandelion and think they don't care.

Claire Shaver Haughton gives us a fascinating look at how the most common plants like apples and potatoes came to America in the early settler years. Her engaging stories make history come alive in a readable format. Each plant is presented individually with botanic information and undergirded by excellent research. Many a parent could make history interesting for their children around the dinner table by regaling these vignettes of explorers and shipping captains who brought their culture's most popular fruits and vegetables to a new land. Some vagabond varieties arrived unintentionally and changed the landscape forever. Highly recommend!

I love this book, if you are a gardener this gives you a great history of why our gardens look the way they do. more people need to read this book and go back to the days when everyone would trade and plant seeds.

I have recommended this book to many people. It is an easy read filled with fantastic information. The combination of botany and history is an entertaining read.

Having known the author personally, this book is of great interest to me. Claire went through a tremendous amount of research and at that did a great job... SO interesting to know where all these plants come from originally.

I bought this book for my mother for Christmas, but I couldn't wait to read it myself after scanning pages before wrapping it.
