"Patrick Manson" by Philip Manson-Bahr is as good a place as any to learn about history's greatest un-sung hero. More than a billion people are alive and healthy today because of Patrick Manson's research in tropical medicine. Yet, few people have ever heard of him. This is unfortunate, as Patrick Manson's research has spared our modern world from the debilitating horrors of tropical diseasesthat made life a living hell to those who managed to survive with these ailments (not to mention the millions who died outright from them). For one of many examples consider filiariasis (elephantiasis). Patrick Manson proved this parasite was spread by mosquitoes. This was the first disease to be shown to be mosquito-borne and led directly to the research that proved many others (most notably malaria and yellow-fever) were also spread by mosquitoes. The impact on human progress of this discovery cannot be over-stated Because this book is a survey (in the "British Men of Science" series) the full drama of this (and other discoveries) is not detailed in this volume. Unmentioned in this book is that Manson's discovery paved the way for development of the drug diethylcarbamazine to combat filiariasis. Since filiarisis was a major problem in China (where Patrick Manson did his research) the government of China decided right away to mix diethylcarbamazine in all domestic salt supplies, thereby eliminating the horrors of lymphatic filiariasis from China early in the 20th century.
