This book is not only a great tool when learning portuges but also an inside into the carioca culture. Each one of the forty short-stories are loaded with the everyday events of the life in the city of Rio.
I tutor Portuguese at a university level. The director of Portuguese decided to use this book for fifth semester Portuguese and I don't think it was a good idea. The short stories in the book are great (I am a personal fan of Carlos Drummond de Andrade), but the exercises are not very clear and lack an answer key; even the director had a hard time deciding what the correct answers were. The book is good for someone interested in some personal study, but I do not believe it should be used in a classroom setting.
I was assigned this for second quarter Portuguese at UCSC, Winter 2015, Accelerated Elementary Portuguese for non Spanish speakers. I enjoy the reading challenge and that the stories are filled with so much culture behind the language; a real insight into Brazil of the past and perhaps what we will encounter today. Professora uses these for reading comprehension and writing response practice, we've been reading and responding to one or two per week this quarter. I am figuring out much more about the language because of the stories.They are really neat stories!
Very helpful in learning Portuguese.
