Famous Robots and Cyborgs is a high-octane voyage through the history of our metallic friends and foes. Dan Roberts narrates the history, strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and foibles of a plethora of fictional robots, cyborgs, and mechanical races—taking in the pronouncements of sci-fi visionaries and eminent robotics scientists along the way. Roberts guides us through the evolution of the deadly Cylons of Battlestar Gallactica in its various forms to movie classics like the mysterious Gort of The Day the Earth Stood Still, the iconic C-3PO, and of course the Terminator. We encounter crazed cybernetic killers, megalomaniac computers, living spaceships, beautiful androids, human brains in metal bodies, and ultracompetitive robot gladiators. Along the way, find answers to such questions as: Are robots capable of love? Which were the least convincing and most laughable movie robots of all time? Can robots harm humans to save themselves? And can you really destroy a deadly cyborg assassin with the force of an exploding oil tanker?Famous Robots and Cyborgs is a joyful, eclectic, informative, celebratory journey through the hi-tech world of the mechanical man (and woman). Packed full of trivia, robo-facts, controversy, history, and information on robot toys, games, films, TV, and books, it will delight the dedicated robot aficionado and the interested newcomer alike.

Being a dedicated science fiction buff, I was looking forward to Dan Roberts' FAMOUS ROBOTS & CYBORGS; AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ROBOTS FROM TV, FILM, LITERATURE, COMICS, TOYS AND MORE. I have fond emories of some of those clinking, clacking, world-threatening creatures - Gort, Robby, the Terminator, Wall-E, the Borg and less fond memories of others - V'Ger, Box, Twiki, etc. After reading Roberts' book, a 2014 Skyhorse release, I have to say I was hoping for much more.First off, the book is an entertaining, fairly wide-ranging summary of robots, cyborgs, etc All 'the usual suspects' are there and then some. Each creation rates a write-up ranging from one to three pages. Each entry includes 'Key Narratives' (film, TV, book appearances), weaponry, physical appearance, fear factor rating, cuteness factor rating, skills, memorable catchphrases, assessments, etc.Secondly, the price is dirt-cheap...$14.95. So, why the three-star rating?Answer: Photographs or the lack thereof. The book has a four-page photo insert that depicts 24 robots, science fiction writers, etc. and that's it. Big disappointment. So, FAMOUS ROBOTS & CYBORGS is a mixed bag. Informative text; easy-on-the-pocketbook price and way too few pix. It's worth a look...but your call, folks.

Though this volume offers a great time span of information, its severe lack of photographs or visual reference is a major strike against it. There are only 24 images for what is touted as an 'Encyclopedia of Robots'. I wish it were more visually thorough.

I was very disappointed by the lack of pictures in this book. There are only a few in the center.

I didn't like that there was no photo of a famous tv Robot-Lost In Space's "Robot" I threw the book out. Someone tell me where I can get a book with this photo, please. Thanks.
