Time and the Other contains a series of essays presented as lectures in 1946–47 at the Collège Philosophique in Paris, along with additional essays dealing with time, sociality, and ethics. This work represents, along with Existence and Existents, the first formulation of Levinas's own philosophy, later more fully developed in other works. Beginning with an analysis of existence without existents, Time and the Other then describes the origination of the subject, and moves through its encounter with another person.

TIME AND THE OTHER was first presented as a series of lectures in 1946/47 at the College Philosophique, in the intellectually charged atmosphere of post-war Paris. Along with EXISTENCE AND EXISTENTS it represents the first book length formulation of Levinas's own philosophy of ethical metaphysics. It is not only a clear statement of his thought but is focused on the central issue of modern and contemporary philsopohy: the meaning and role of time. This volume also includes two important articles by Levinas on time, "The Old and the New" (1980) and "Diachrony and Representation" (1983). Reviewed by Richard A. Cohen (translator)
I didn't really understand Levinas as a philosopher (responding to contemporary arguments) until I read his more detailed presentations of how a subject arises, found here and in Existence and Existents.
For me it was a good read. Could be difficult for someone new to philosophy.
