This review is for Understanding Ballistics: Complete Guide to Bullet Selection Paperback by Philip P. Massaro.First let me say I'm not a ballistics or firearms expert. I'm a novice who was looking for serous reading material on the subject of ballistics. I had high hopes when I ordered this book but it disappointed me greatly and below I will describe why.In my opinion this book shouldn't have the word ballistics in the title. You won't find many in depth descriptions or math formulas for how powder volume, rifling, or projectile shape will affect things. You won't find tables on how wind or gravity affect flight. While this book does provide a lot of good information on what type of cartridge and bullet is good for a particular application, I wouldn't call it ballistics.The next problem is about half the book is spent on oversize non-technical pictures. While pictures are nice, to my disappointment there are a few cut aways or diagrams and the majority of pictures are simply different cartridges or bullets in various positions. Because of the size and number of pictures the book is a very quick read and I was I able to finish it in a couple days.The content of this book is heavily skewed toward rifle ammo. Something like 50 pages are spent on handgun ammo while about 190 are spent on rifle ammo. (See the Table of Contents in the preview.) And to me the handgun chapters seem rushed and aren't as in depth as the rifle chapters.There is no index, glossary of terms, or appendices. I would have liked to see all three. The index for quick look ups, the glossary for technical definitions, and the appendix with some ballistic charts and tables.
