As a young mother of 3 boys and an eternal student, I have been reading parenting books for the better part of 8 years. I have read on sleep training, feeding my children, discipline - by being tough, or being strict, or being conscious, or being positive. In summary, each book promises that in these 3- 5 simple steps I will get my children to do everything I've ever wanted and I will never have to scream at them again! Yet, the years keep passing and my kids don't do chores without complaining or make their bed every morning or eat all their vegetables all the time. Quite frankly, it can get a little frustrating when none of the simple steps work on YOUR child. And then I read Kids Learn What they Live. This collection of essays is not a how-to-get-your-kids-to-do-exactly-what-you-want-all-the-time. On the contrary, it offers insight and wisdom and food for thought. This author gives you permission to love your child for who he/she is, even on the days they didn't pick up their clothes from the floor. I am so thankful I found this book while my kids were young. Because quite frankly, this is only the beginning- the competitive sports, school admissions, test scores, and achievements can drive a parent mad- and completely alienate the parent from their child. This book has inspired me to enjoy my time with my kids instead of trying my hardest to create my very own personalized robots. It zeros in on what matters most. And to top it off, this author is hysterical. Instead of taking notes and creating to dos, I found myself laughing out loud and reflecting on how lucky I am to be a parent, to have the kids I have, and to live in this very moment. Every parent in the world should read this book.
I have been an educator for my entire life. I was the Dean of a high school for 18 years. I have dealt with a LOT of kids and families (and according to many, done a good job of it). David Altshuler gets it. He has always gotten it. He is a leader in the field of Educational Consulting and his words are diamonds. Few people have the depth of knowledge and insight into the machinations of the family dynamic. This book should serve as a map for any family looking to go beyond the surface of things. It is as if he has held a mirror up to complexities of raising and dealing with children and reflected the story in the clearest, most concise loving way possible. Kudos to my mentor and dear friend!!!
Bought ten copies to give to everyone, including my grandchildren who may eventually have children. Always love the spin that David puts on his articles/ideas and gain something from each reading. Cannot recommend this enough for parents or people in parenting type relationships (teachers, therapists, coaches, ministers, etc). Grover Shaunty, MSW
