I bought this book for my English class and I haven't written a paper without referring back to it. The exercises are helpful, but the website is a joke. The back of the book is the most helpful to me though. The book guides readers through the citing process for MLA, APA and Chicago style citations towards the back of the book, nothing other books haven't done before, right? Well, what I really like is the real life examples and explanations it provides as well. My girlfriend, who is in medical school and no stranger to 10 page papers, prefers this book to the APA handbook she was suggested to buy from her professors. Recommend this book to anyone who has to write papers for educational or professional purposes.
This book teaches writing from scratch. How to think about writing, how to pick a subject, organize sentences, focus on the topic and stay coherent. There is a useful quick review of grammar in the back which includes something new to me: a noun/adjective. That cleared away decades of puzzlement for me. Many more topics, mostly geared to the academic writer rather than the fiction writer. Plenty of examples. I own at least 40 how-to books about writing but this is the one that actually explains how to write in concrete, practical terms. I bought this book used and found that it came with a little folder that contained a special code to access extra online materials.
If you have a few APA or MLA style papers in your future, do yourself a favor and buy this handbook! I also own the official APA Handbook, 6th ed., and the Bedford Handbook if far superior. The main reason for its superiority is the logical layout, straight-forward examples, and easy-to-access table of contents.I have used this handbook more in the last month than I have used the APA handbook in the last year. Well worth your money.

Very useful handbook for writing essays. Ordered a used one and came in good shape. Have been using it for two college English classes. Honestly, there isn't big difference between old and new versions.
Although I barely used this book for my class it was very useful when it came to writing classification, comparing and contrasting, and persuasive essays. It is also helpful when writing essays in APA format for Psychology majors.
My husband is an excellent writer and hard to impress. He was very pleased with our daughter's (9th grade) school choice of making this book a requirement. For best results, don't wait for the teacher to assign the reading of this book. Instead, get it now and have your child go through it on their own time and get familiarized with the content. If they do that now, they will reap tremendous benefits and improve their writing as a result. Your child, unless naturally motivated, will resist, but if you're interested in his learning of the mechanics, this is a must.
