Does the closing of the cold war era open up the possibility of reading the Communist Manifesto in new ways? In the first teaching edition of the post-Cold War era, Toews proposes new guidelines for reassessing the work to help students reconstruct the meaning of the Manifesto in its time and at the close of the twentieth century. Together with the complete text of the work, this brief volume includes some key foundational documents by Hegel, Feverbach, Marx, Engels, and others that show the evolution of and influences on Marxist theory over time. The editor's introduction traces the trajectory of Marx's thought from the 1830s onward, while providing background on the political, social, and intellectual contexts of which the Manifesto was a historical product.

This is a great copy of the Communist Manifesto because, as with all of this particular Bedford Series, it provides lots of related documents to build context from. There is some text-book style background information, but most of the book is primary source documents that make it a really handy collection for anyone doing scholarly work. Fear not, whether you are trying to convert fellow commies or crush those revolutionary reds, this book will help you build your own case from scratch without having to wade through some author's opinion.

The content of this book is well placed with good historical background of both Marx and Engels and the founding, development and expansion of the communist party. Having said all this, it is a shame that the author was more concerned with his command of the English language than the presentation of factual material. The author went to great pains to explain details by stringing together long esoteric words that could have been just as well explained in plain simple English---it is a shame as the actual content of this book and the chronological path taken to explain the Manifesto and its' background is very well done.

Right book for my class

I have read much of Marx' work on economics and expected the Communist Manifesto to be up to similar standards of depth and meaning, Instead much of this book is superficial and almost childlike in its naiveté. I had read snippets before, so had some idea what the book was about, however even though I had heard it was written for the "masses" I was not prepared for such foolishness. Apparently the book was written when Marx was a young man in his twenties, so I suppose there is some excuse. It is a shame that his other work including "Capital" is clouded in many people's minds by this flawed thinking - and even more that it was taken as a rally point for a major political movement of the past 150 years.
