This is an amazing book by an amazing man. He founded the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale, and he has gone down in history with pretty much the same rap as the Black Panthers: violent black power freaks. This is simply not true and this book sheds some real light on the man and his legacy of non-violent revolution.I recommend this book to any young person age 16+

This book became my guideline in times when I did not know where I should take strength from. It is a book full of power, intelligence and passion.

The fight against injustice and cruelty pushes people to new heights. "To Die for the People" is a biography of Huey Newton, founder of the Black Panther party, and has been labeled a radical all of his life. Offering insights to one of the biggest influences of the civil rights movement and black power movements of the 1960s and 70s, his story is one that's crucial to understanding the social changes of the second half of the twentieth century. "To Die for the People" is a worthwhile addition to any collection focusing on social issues and memoirs.

'This re-issue of TO DIE FOR THE PEOPLE opens a window on Huey Newton and the Black Panther Party - on of the most dynamic and revolutionary organizations ever to exist. In these selections from Huey's writings and speeches, readers can trace the development of the activist personal and political thinking as well as the radical changes that took place in the politics, ideology and actions of the Black Panther Party.'With a rare and persuasive honesty, TO DIE FOR THE PEOPLE records the Party's internal struggles, rivalries, and contradictions, and the result is a fascinating look at a young revolutionary group determined to find ways to deal with the injustice it saw in US society.'Huey P. Newton - co-founder of the Black Panther Party with Bobby Seale - was its chief theoretician. Huey has long been a hero to many and is currently being rediscovered by people interested in the revolutionary struggle of Black people for liberation.'Toni Morrison, whose acclaimed novels include BELOVED, SULA and JAZZ, edited this book for its initial publication in 1972.'

Huey does a remarkable job in explaining many of viewpoints and objectives of the Black Panther Party. If you really want to gain an understanding of the Black Panther Party, especially Huey, this is a must read.

Huey Percy Newton (1942-1989) was a political and urban activist who co-founded the Black Panther Party. He was also the author of War Against the Panthers: A Study of Repression in America (his doctoral dissertation) and Revolutionary Suicide: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) (his autobiography). Here are some quotations from the book:"The Black Panther Party is a Marxist-Leninist party because we follow the dialectical method and we also integrate theory with practice." (Pg. 25)"Because the Black Panther Party is not embarrassed to change or admit error, tonight I would like to accept the criticism and say that those critics were absolutely right. We are a collection of communities ... because we have no superstructure of our own." (Pg. 37)"There are more Black people in America than the total population of many countries now enjoying full membership in the United Nations." (Pg. 84)"We see very little difference between Blacks who make profits from the Black community and refuse to contribute to Black survival programs, and the White profiteers such as Mayfair... Why should the Black community nourish a Black profiteer who has no concern for his brother?" (Pg. 110)"If the Peace Movement is successful, then the revolution will be successful. If the Peace Movement fails, then the revolution in the mother country fails." (Pg. 151)"But the women's liberation front and the gay liberation front are our friends, they are potential allies, and we need as many allies as possible." (Pg. 154)"America is World-Enemy-Number-One and the military is its strong arm." (Pg. 190)

this is huey talking about .. his beliefs.. his outlooks.. if you're looking for information FROM Newton this is it. Keep in mind that these words are his and he's writing with an agenda in mind. His changing outlook, his shifting beliefs come through. His stance on some issues, gay, lesbian for instance are archaic and backward, however he still has more of an open mind than many others ...Newton helped make the BPP if you're doing research or you want a primary source this is a good one to have.. his words.. his beliefs.. more about early 1970's rather than the late 1960's..

only a great mind like Toni Morrison is fitting to write on the Great mind of Huey P.Newton.Mr.Newton had alot of vision&inner spirit for change.he was ahead of his time.very compelling book.
