This is another fine work by James S. Robbins. Extremely well written, excellent notes, and an enjoyable, easy read. It's a combination of a civics and history lesson, with the discussion of what makes up an American, from the discovery of the new continent by various explorers, early settlers, colonialism, taming of the wild frontier, to the formation of a nation, being a nation of immigrants, and highlighting important events. Then he discusses the American values and American Exceptionalism, Freedom and Liberty, and American character. I especially enjoyed the linking of centuries past to modern day issues. Instead of the American Dream and Melting Pot, we are fighting the constant pressure by various schools of political ideology which undermine those things which made us exceptional. Who are Americans? Will we continue to survive the test of time and that which undermines the American Value? I believe James thinks we can, but we must work towards minimizing the politics of division & corruption of our ideals, by reinvigorate the American Dream, and having each generation be stewards in carrying forward the grand experiment of this great nation. Not only do I recommend this book, I am looking forward to his next one.
A big slice of Americana. Made me proud to be an American. Robbins takes the reader from the very beginning of our existence, with a meager identity, to the present. He points out that freedom did not start with the American Revolution but with those that came here to escape oppression. Taking us through the challenges each generation had to overcome and how they did so, Robbins shows how American Exceptionalism was forged and how it flourished with a melting pot to nurture it. Was America part of a divine plan? One only has to review our factual history to see that it is worthy of serious discussion. However, Robbins brings us up to date with a warning. With all the problems and scandals existing today he offers three possible scenarios. We are accountable to choose the one that secures our future and the exceptionalism that stands out in the world.Certainly this is a patriotic book that all Americans should read and enjoy.
Excellent read. If you love American history and love this country, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Dr. Robbins packs a lot of information into the 160 pages and shares the story of America in an interesting and informative manner. It enlightens & inspires and makes you feel proud to call yourself an American! Every citizen needs to know this history, and certainly every patriot will love this book!
This book is unashamedly patriot and, therefore, completely uplifting. It's a history (of sorts) of how we became "Americans" and not just settlers. Robbins explains with great detail and references (historical and anecdotal) what made America exceptional. Yes, he also talks about why some citizens want to deny that greatness, that exceptionalism. And a contemporary book about America would have to address that sad issue.But the book is not chest-bumping, jingoistic, cheerleading. It is a well documented and footnoted account of who, how and why America went from wilderness to the leader of the world.Read it for yourself. Read it to your kids. Give graduates a well needed lesson in civics and pride. But above all, read it.
This author did his due diligence in gathering the information he offers for our perusal. Very well written. It was a joy to read.
