This is a fantastically interesting book. It is based on the ideas in Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community's Assets. Basically, it is the story of a neighborhood that decided to address its own problems. I was reminded of the stories in Banker To The Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty. Some years ago, Smithsonian Magazine ran an article on similar efforts in Banana Kelly, the Bronx neighorhood where Colin Powell grew up. My eyes followed the sentence "...efforts like this can be traced back to one person, who in this case was..." I've always wanted to know how we inspire that one person. This book is a good start. Mobilizing Communities: Asset Building as a Community Development Strategy is useful. How to Improve your Community Como Mejorar su comunidad:: Over 30 ways to improve your community, quickly, even if you are working by yourself, don't ... had training, and have no idea where to start is more of a how-to, which is useful.
