The past is a different country, People did things differently there. As a reliable and entertaining guide to the past I have enjoyed Dr. Ian Mortimer's books on Medieval and Elizabethan England. Now I have discovered the brilliant work of Roy and Lesley Adkins. Their new book on Jane' Austen's England is a gem. The famous author lived from 1775 dying at the early age of forty-one in 1817. During that brief span of time she wrote such classics as "Pride and Prejudice" "Sense and Sensibility "Emma": Mansfield Park" "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion. She left "Sandition" unfinished, During that brief span of Austen's life the nation of Great Britain changed from a rural to an urban and industrialized society. Britain won the long wars against Napoleon and moved into a position of world power. The Adkins take us on a wild toad's ride of adventures where we feel as if we were eyewitnesses to the happenings spread before us on the page. Topics cover include: wedding customs; the working world; the military; medicine; sermons and folklore; the entertainment scene; modes of travel; funeral and the traditions surrounding death, literature and many other fascinating aspects of life in that distant day. The book contains quotations from many period diaries, memoirs and newspaper accounts. These quotations give a sense of immediacy to the book. A small sampling of quotable quotes:"A good number of parents arranged marriages to ensure that their children were securely established in life."-p. 3"A good marriage was measured by a couple's ability to produce children."-p. 21"It was rare for any family not to suffer the death of at least one child."-p. 38"Because quill pens wore out, there was a perpetual market for goose fathers."-p.
