This little book has been in my collection for a number of years. When I looked for one to give a grandchild with spelling issues, I discovered our local book stores don't even carry it anymore. Well leave it to ...the book arrived quickly and in excellent condition, just as specified and in time for Christmas. Couldn't ask for anything more!

In 1988, I changed jobs, and found myself in a position that required written detailed reports. As with all things, if you don't use it, you lose it. The WORD BOOK III came to be well used over the years. Everyone wanted to borrow it, resulting in a missing page in the 'ex' section. The pages were separated from the binding to the point that they had to be stuffed back in place after each use. So, I broke down and replaced my beloved helper, that has proven time and again to be more accurate than spell check. If you need help with spelling, you will find it to be a reliable friend!

In the age of computers & spell check this may not seem valuable but it is to those who still write notes. This was a second hand book replacing one that had the cover fall off from use. This small book takes up little room and provides a great assistance to pen & paper writers. The 4 star rating for this book was that it was marked up to some extent but still usable.

If you've ever been at a loss for words, this is the book for you. You can even find every word you need to continue to write this review. ....Prerequisite for purchase should be Words, and Words II, as I'm pretty sure there are more than 40,000 words needed in our language. If not, "Whatever."

and more. The real reason I went looking for this is the previous-generation word book I had was beginning to show its age--the pages were beginning to yellow, and I thought "time for a new one". And boy, did I luck out! Even in this computer and text-em age, I would be kinda lost without it!

I finally decided my 1976 edition needs replacing. It's like losing an old friend. The book is hardbound and has a list price of $3.95, which in 1976 was probably one hours earning for me. For many years it sat neglected on the shelf as I used the spell checker in the modern electronic writing media like this comment box. However about 8 months ago I began an old fashioned pen pal friendship with a death row inmate and as I wrote long hand I quickly remembered actually how poor a speller I am. What's worse, I'm only looking up the words I think I don't know how to spell. There are probably countless words I'm not looking up because I think they are spelled correctly! In my book, I use a crude marking system next to the words I look up. I start with a line and add another line each time I relook it up. Eventually three lines makes an asterisk. At that point I know I really should work hard at learning how to spell the word. If I look it up a fourth time, I circle the asterisk. If I look it up a fifth time I darken the circle. Geez! I have lots of dark circles.Time to update.

I love this little book and I was really hoping for a new version. Alas, I see that the one listed here is the very same one I already own and have used for the past 20 years. This version was first published in 1990. Time for an updated version, Houghton Mifflin Company! This little gem of a book is a simple listing of 40 K of the most commonly used words in the English language. It makes it super easy to find words you are unsure how to spell. It also tells you how to divide a word into syllables and where the accented syllable should be. It includes a simple guide to spelling rules, how to form plurals and a short list of abbreviations. It truly is a pocket-sized gem of a book.

This book is excellent. Better than a dictionary if you are a bad speller. You can have almost no idea how to spell a word, you will find the correct spelling in this book. This book is a must for anyone who is a bad speller.
