What can one say about a desktop calendar?It has one word a day; for the weekends, they join Sat/Sun onto one sheet. This makes it more practical for Mon-Fri office workers.I think I have a pretty good vocabulary - I only find, in a year, maybe a dozen words I know - I haven't actually counted, but I consider I'm getting my money's worth.On the back of each page, there is a etymology of the word (origin and history).Probably the only thing that could be criticized is the glue used across the top to hold the pages (and the glue on the back to hold it to the stand). I have multiple desktop calendars, but I believe it is this one that has the ultra-strong top glue. A perfect glue would allow each page to be detached without tearing over time. The vocabulary calendar tends to build up and the pages start to tear across the top. I have to frequently use a pen-knife to keep the top edge trimmed. Some calendars have a very thin glue strip; as long as the pages don't fall off, that is fine. Some have a thick strip of glue that makes it hard to keep trimmed down with my pen-knife. This one is OK, except for pages not coming off cleanly as the year goes on.The glue on the back is sufficient to last the year... I know that in some of my desktop calendars, the back falls off by the end of November. But I don't think this is one.
We have had one of these calendars in our house for many years--now that my children are adults they each get one to share with their families- it allows of to think of each other at least once a day-I will be purchasing my four.
I am really enjoying this calendar, it is very fun and interesting! I really like that they give a definition of the word but also add a little history and context too so that you can truly understand how to use it. I have this calendar at work and try to find ways of using my "Word of the day". Not all of the words can be worked organically into a conversation but some are good enough to save for another time or when the perfect opportunity arises. This is a good calendar if you're a curious, and at times mischievous person. I have no criticisms and highly recommend this calendar.
Very helpful, but next year I will look for one with less verbage. I thought having the day and date highlighted in red would make it easier to spot, but the red is pretty dark and I still have trouble reading it at a quick glance.
I had high expectations-- but some of these words are proper nouns-- as in the specific name of a plant, and a bunch seem to be figures of speech and/or regional words, like "wowser." Was looking for more... erudite ...selections.
Great morning conversation-starter as the kids are falling asleep in their cereal bowls before school! I have two boys (ages 11 & 13) and one girl (15) and we all get something out of these words each day.
I get this item for my mother's birthday every year because she loves them so much! They have become a great source of amusement for the whole family since anyone who visits her always has to check out the Word of the Day, and this usually generates an awesome conversation! My husband had a 2015 word a day calendar that he loved (different brand) so I purchased this one for 2016. He does not care for this one as many of the words are pretty out there and some you would think are made up.
