I bought this book for my 12-year-old son as some "bridge" learning for summer vacation. The "high school" part of the title intrigued him from the start. He enjoys the succinct definitions and relevant, humorous examples of useage. Over the summer he has picked up nearly 200 words and is eager to continue.
It was 8 years after I took the SATS but I still wish I had this book then just because the examples of the words are really practical and simply written!
This is one of the best books for my ESL middle schooler. As an ESL student until the sixth grade, my tutee had a Spanish speaking teacher and assistant. As result, his Spanish is very good;; however, his English oral and written skills are not up to par. He is woefully behind in his receptive and expressive abilities to speak and write English.During this summer break, his homework is to study English as he is very good in math and artistic matters. He gets along with others and due to his quiet personality, he is not very conversational. I hope that this book will engage him and pump up his confidence and self esteem. This book is not very helpful for an ESL student, but also an English speaking student readying his/her self for the ACT or SAT.
A great book, very user friendly. The definition is very precise, and the examples too. This book works like a mini dictionary. But what makes this book so great is that, a definition is not just presented like so many other word books or lists, but is told in a more user friendly tone, that helps the reader to gain a more insight into how the words should be preceived and used in certain situations. A great asset to anyone that wants a better understanding at the use of the words.
I plan to use this book to create vocabulary units for my gifted middle school students. It is well laid out and easy to follow. The words seem challenging, but at the same time important to learn. Looking forward to using it!
Great idea book to offer teens and young adults as they prepare for college. This books offers a definition along with a sentence for each definition.
I actually bought this book for my grandson and he is quite happy with it. I (he) will be back.
I gave this book to a new High School Freshman. The student began using it immediately. She told me she loves incorporating new words into her school work. As for me, I am to old to recall if I knew most of these words by the time I was thirteen, fourteen. What I do know is that I enjoy reference books, my thesaurus and the exceptional 12" hardbound dictionary that my father gave me to this day!
