Ms. (Her last name) is clearly a spectacularly talented writer. This book is almost overwhelming in how compelling and involving it is. Clear, entertaining and informative prose. Vivid characters. AND, a story so OVERFLOWING with surprises that, just when I thought I'd solved the mystery, someone I thought was dead entered the room. The guy I assumed was the "mastermind"? Washed up on shore. This bravely unique novel consists of two intertwined narratives. 1) What happened on a luxurious yacht from which every crew member and passenger mysteriously vanished, and 2) The investigation into WHY, when the vessel arrived in port, it was a "ghost ship". I found one of the two narratives more compelling than the other, and just when a fascinating event occured in the more compelling narrative, I'd turn the page and be back in the less compelling narrative. This made me want to skim, so I could get back to the other thread, but such is the nature of this book that, skipping even ONE SENTENCE could leave one or ALL of your questions unanswered. My one, not terribly important "complaint", is that Ms. (Her last name) provides the answers to her story's mysteries in a character's end-of-book monologue, delivered by the book's primary investigator (who is not an actual detective). This technique, the sum-up-monologue, is oft-used, and COULD indicate an author's laziness. "Explaining rather than showing". But, THIS author? Laziness? IMPOSSIBLE. It was just... her choice. What her artist's mind, heart, and soul told her, either consciously or "un", to do. I WAS left wondering, however, how this particular character suddenly knew EVERTHING. THOUSANDS of details. It felt to me as if the "how she found OUT about everything" chapter was missing.
