I really enjoyed this book. It touches on a lot of cultural points that are somewhat idiosyncratic, and unique to the island. Prevalent are themes of poverty, home ownership, a society struggling with what it means to be productive. Its archetypes cover embody different cases, ultimately trying to resolve why there remains a gulf in the productive classes of society. How much of that stems from race, personal initiative or circumstance?More importantly, it is a pretty faithful translation of the original (written in dutch). While some of the minor points are better explained, and are more viscerally relatable in Dutch (given that it is a language imported and placed on the local populace, the choice of using Dutch in and of itself carried some added resonance.) I definitely recommend it, particularly if you have an interest in Curacao and its cultural underpinnings, particularly in the 60s.
