Fifty Readings in Philosophy is a flexible and affordable collection of classic and contemporary primary sources in philosophy. The readings cover all the main topics of Western philosophy, each one carefully edited to be long enough to present a self-contained argument but not so lengthy that students lose track of the main point. Introductions and explanatory notes make the readings accessible to students. All these features have made this book a proven pedagogical success and a best-selling reader in introductory philosophy.

This book was required reading for an introductory university level course in philosophy. As such, this book serves as a compilation/collection of fifty philosophical works which aim to provide a basis in philosophy on a range of issues/topics, from ethics to religion to politics. The individual works are grouped accordingly based on these topics.Included within the book are works from those philosophers you would expect, such as Plato, Aristotle, and René Descartes, and then signature works from a variety of individuals with unique viewpoints and philosophies, such as Karl Marx and Martin Luther King Jr (two individuals who couldn’t be more different). For the benefit of the reader, biographical sketches of the individual writers are provided along with summaries to help the reader retain the central theme/purpose/point of each work and/or each section. These readings are not for everybody, but if you’ll give the book, and the individual works, a chance, I’m sure your knowledge base will increase with even a little change in your worldviews/opinions. Enjoy!

This was the only assigned reading for an introduction to philosophy course. Unfortunately it's not enough. I did not like this book because there was not enough context given for each reading and even worse the readings were chopped to bits to the point that in more complex readings it was hard to understand the author's intent.

I purchased this strictly for a philosophy course I was taking. However I must admit the book is one I will keep in my collection , for it is well published and includes all the basics for an Intro to Philosophy course . I highly recommend for both personal and academic uses. The book came in good condition and on time . I would definitely consider purchasing any book from this seller again.

I was impressed by the diversity and thorough amount of sources this book presented. Abel is also a very good editor. He provides very useful summaries and biographies of the writers. I was also very impressed by how he divided the selections into viewpoint-appropriate categories. This is a very valuable resource for philosophical topics.

I bought this book for my intro to philosophy class. I liked the reading in the text, it was very helpful. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interested in philosophy.

It is just a rental, but I was told it was in good condition and it's not. There is writing on the pages, the corners on the cover are torn and damaged, and the cover is bent in places. It also looks like it might have got wet.

Three star review because I had to read this book against my will for a required class. Got it as a rental which is great to save money, it arrived quickly and was in good condition. Some of the readings were cut up or abridged which makes it difficult to grasp the full meaning and some things seem out of context. But I mean, as far as textbooks go, this isn't the worst thing I've had to read.

Okay quality for the price. A little tattered but definitely in useable quality
