Bruce Ballenger's take on the research process goes where other books on the topic do not. His approach models an authenic writing experience for the student writer, but professional writers and teachers would benefit just as much from taking his engaging exercises to heart. The book promotes the tenet that curiosity drives academic reserach. Although marketed as a college-level text, I have used many of the techniques with high school English students. The tone of the book is personal, so that tends to rub some people the wrong way, but the text serves as an extension of the pedagogical beliefs to which the author adheres. The examples of professional writing do not adhere to MLA guidelines, but they do help make the point that people incorporate research into their lives in numerous ways. It's a given that academic writing will follow citation guidelines and the book provides guidance on MLA and APA. Ballenger's book will help any writer go beyond writing old-school research reports to producing a research paper where the writer is using information to make meaning. High schools across the nation should adopt his books for use in the classroom.[...]
The Book was very helpful! Had all you needed to know about the works cited process. I kept mine, cause rearch papers kick my booty, but with this book I find myself struggling less to write a college paper
This little book is wonderful for educators who work with beginning students. I found the 5-week process particularly helpful working with 5-week University of Phoenix students. The exercises contained in each chapter helped students to better understand not only how to do research, but why. I can't wait to get to Boise and meet the author. Even better--work with the author.
I bought this for an English class I was taking. It was required reading. This book became an asset. I have referred to it when writing papers for other classes. It is easy to read and understand. I recommend this book to all high school and college students.
This is the best book I have read about writing a research document. I never thought I could write a twelve-page document until I used this book. I really liked the way it breaks down each of the steps to write a research document. What I liked the most is how it lays out a plan to write the research without procrastinating. Great author!
I had to buy this book for a writing course. Found it to be mostly useless as I had already established my own writing habits and style which had served me well. Flies in the face of everything I've ever been taught about academic writing. Won't use again.
I would recommend this to every student that needs to do some sought of research for their assignments or basically any kind of research. It is comprehensive with a host of additional resources to make your writing and research endeavors well worth the purchase.
I just opened this book for the first time today and read the first 4 pages and I already think it might be my favorite textbook of all the college textbooks i own this semester. The author writes it in a way that makes it sound like he's talking to you one on one and the vocabulary is like ordinary day to day colloquial language so you don't really feel like you're being lectured by some old professor but more like you're talking to a writing tutor. The content is perfect for people who like to take small steps to begin writing research papers instead of rushing into it.
